:happy:Found quarter 6 inches deep right on top steel wire with X-Terra 70

Hi Guys I am new to the forum would like to introduce my self. My name is John and I live near Pittsburgh, PA. I have been MDing for 21 years and used Minelab metal detectors for over 10 years. When I was at the Gold Show in Carlisle, PA last month I was talking to Minelab Representative Kevin and he showed me the X-Terra 70. He showed me how the X70 could pick up a small gold nugget right though a natural iron stone and how a it could pickup a nickle next to a pull tab. He also explained how VFLEX technology worked. I was impressed and bought the X70 there and took advantage of Gold Show special, which was a free coil. I had a choice between the 6" medium freq. concentric or 6" High freq. Double D. I chose the Double D. To my pleasant surprise, when I finally received the X70 a 10" elliptical high freq. coil was shipped with it. I figure I got bonus from Minelab. Not only did I buy the X70 for coin shooting but I want to try nugget shooting some day.

Today after work, I had about an hour to go MDing and I chose to go to an old fair ground that is close to were I live. I had the 10" elliptical coil on the X70. I got a nice smooth signal and the meter read 42. I had a little bit of trouble pinpointing but I finally narrowed it down to where the coin was. I cut the plug and saw the quarter. I pulled the quarter out and to my amazement I saw that it was sitting right in the middle of and right on top of a steel piece of wire 8" long and about 1/8" thick. Thats why I had trouble pinpointing the coin. By the way the quarter was clad but I am sure the silver will be coming soon! I like 10" elliptical coil and I will be keeping it on the my detector. I think the X70 runs smoother with the DD coil on then with the standard concentric coil. That only my opinion but it seems to work for me. There is a lot of steel and iron junk just about everywhere I hunt for coins and the ground is moderately to highly mineralized. Anyhow thanks for listening. John

and thanks for sharing the story of the masked quarter. If your ground is highly mineralized, the DD coils will provide a more stable hunt. It sounds like you are off to a good start with your X-70 and the elliptical. Did you get the 6-inch DD coil too? If so, I think you will really like it for coin shooting. Great depth and excellent separation characteristics. Keep us posted on your future finds. HH Randy

Hi John,

Welcome to the forum and the X-Terra 70. I am sure that you are really going to like them both. If you have any questions, someone here will probably have the answer. Keep us posted on your progress with the machine. If you are hunting in high mineralization and a lot of trash, give the DD coils a try. You will be surprised how well they perform.

You made a great choice in buying that X 70. I use mine along with my Explorer II and I will tell that it performs every bit as well as the Explorer, sometimes better depending on the conditions! I also use the 10" DD and it is a great coil. I found this 1803 draped bust large cent last week with it. I like this detector for field hunting especially since you can move much faster than with the Explorer which needs a snails pace type of hunting. Also the X Terra is better in uneven soil/rocky areas where the Explorer coil really needs to be in contact with the ground.

Thanks guys for all the responses. I like reading the posts and the X-Terra Forum gave me a lot good information.

Digger no I did not received a 6" DD coil, I just assume Minelab Nevada did not have any to ship with my detector and they substitute the elliptical. I like it a lot and found a couple old clad spills mix with iron wire.

jeff & Maria that is a great find! I haven't found a Large Cent that old yet. My oldest is 1820 but I will keep on looking.:detecting:
