Handling heavy EMI

I was detecting at a small, local park yesterday and had so much EMI that my E-Trac would only run at a sensitivity between 12 - 15 when set at Auto +3. I tried running at Manual 20, but experienced way too much chatter and falsing. There are several houses nearby as well as power lines overhead. Tried noise cancelling several times, but didn't seem to help much. Is there anything I can do that will allow me to run at a higher sensitivity? Would it help to try a different coil? (Currently using stock pro-coil).

Even with all the EMI, I was still able to find a wheat cent and a silver Washington quarter, so I know there are good targets to be found! Any tips would be appreciated.:help:

There's no guarantee higher sens will go deeper and may actually hurt not just depth , but also disc abilities much like over driving your headlights in fog.
I often encounter ground here where the e-trac rec, sens. is 7 and can sometimes push it to 15 or 20 and still have a clean threshold. I can't run my F75 in those areas above 35 or 40 either. Are you sure it's EMI or just trying to run too hot? Sometimes it's better to take what you can get and be satisfied.

Two things you can try:

Find a clean, metal free area with an open screen and noise cancel with the coil on the ground and see if the rec. sens. increases and stays stable.
Choose your own channel through the noise cancel option and select the one which gives you the highest sens. and go from there.

I would be alot less concerned about a number and more concerned about what the machine was telling me.

Manually noise cancel to find the quietest channel. Auto sensitivity -3 and go from there ( -2 -1 Auto +1 +2 +3) I have never been where the EMI is so bad that I couldn't hunt with a Minelab. These TVA hydro-electric dams are as bad as it gets as far as EMI but you can adjust the machine to hunt. Keep tinkering and swinging. HH :minelab:

Smaller coils always help and another thing I have noticed is that when the ground conditions change (wet, dry) the level of sensitivity changes. One old house I keep hitting has very large power lines next to it and I am simply waiting for a power outage to up sensitivity.

Good points, guys! Thanks so much for the feedback. I'm headed back there next week - I'll let you know what I find.
Thanks!
