Hammered Coin.....

history hunter

New member
Finally after 23 years of detecting in the UK the Xterra 70 helped me find this little beauty..
It's the first hammered coin I have found in my whole detecting life.
Coil used: 10" x 5" elliptical DD 18.75khz.

It's a King John I, Class 6b2, North 975/2 dating from c. 1209-1217

What a great treasure you found. Awesome.

800 years since somebody sadly found out that he has lost it. Maybe Robin Hood was involved. (not really joking; get a look at the linked page)

Do you have any idea what it was worth, the time it was lost? Enough to buy a loaf of bread? Would be interesting to know, imho.

Just some history:

Well a big congrats to you! I can not imagine pulling a coin that old outta the ground! Good hunt, Beale.

and I hope you and the X70 have continued success. Thanks for sharing your find with the rest of us! HH Randy

May I ask. How deep was that fine looking hammered ??

23 years detecting in the UK and your first hammered? I need to come over and help you out friend, LOL. Congrats and HH, Mike

Its hard to believe its taken you 23 yrs to find a hammered but well done! I love the 18.75 kHz coils myself no matter what the size. I see in the picture you posted the area you and the others are detecting is massive, I would definitely be using the round 18.75 or the round 7.5 kHz 10.5" coils for more ground coverage but each to there own. Again congratulations on your find, may the 70 bring you many more finds!
Cheers!

It's value when first minted was a penny, there is a UK site that might tell us what it would have bought today in our modern currency but unfortunately I'll have to search for the site as I can't remember what it's url is. The hammered was found in an upright position and at a depth of 5 to 6 inches, the VDI was 2. I certainly hope to have many more finds of good quality hammered in the future with my Xterra, the sheer excitement of finding it was one of joy.

For those who don't live in the UK and come over here to do a spot of detecting I wish you the best of luck and hope you find one too.
Any finds I have with the Xterra I'll post in the forum..... :detecting:
Many thanks for all your messages of congratulations.

Cheers
Tony.

I wonder how many guys went over that coin and had their discrimination turned up and missed it?? In a good area over there, do you dig every signal that rings up on the positive side of the meter?? WTG!! Congratulations on a very nice find. Good luck and HH. Bob.

i used the straight All Metal mode in Coin & Treasure, with a sens of 25, to discrim out iron in the UK can be fatal to say the least with a minelab & other detectors. Here in the UK you tend to miss silver & gold if iron mask is selected, many roman artefacts are also missed like roman brooches. (bottom left hand side on the explorer II). Yes, a few had been in the area and had probably missed it... They soon came running back and started sweeping the area around me... Within a couple of yards of my findspot another hammered was found whilst others were admiring my hammered.

We had probably in excess of 150 acres to detect, a total of 12 different fields. no doubt we'll hold rallies there for many years to come
If you think an 800 year old coin is old, wait until I find roman stuff.... now that will be really old.... Just recently over 500 bronze age axes have been found in the UK and worth an estimated
