Hammered coin found in New Bern, NC, ID needed

comisoas

Member
I found this hammered coin in New Bern, NC, near downtown, within sight of the water, several years ago. One gentleman I showed the picture to said that he thought it was a Maravedi that was re-stamped and that it probly came from the West Indes, dated around the 15-1600's. I don't know. It is made of copper or bronze. The one side, opposite the side with the X, looks like a face to me if you look closely. I would appreciate any help on this one. It is a little larger than a nickel. I think I may have just bumped into you someplace else. :D

Best guess, comisoas, it might be a Byzantine coin.

The place to ask would be by posting pics at the link below, they'd be able to tell you in a jiffy:

Thanks a million, I will try that

I just did it. I hope someone can ID it. No telling how it got in New Bern. I found it in a lot that had been shaved about 1 foot. I also found a capped bust dime and some CW bullets. Thanks again.
