???Halo Effect???

TURNMASTER

Active member
Can anyone explain what exactly that is? Is that When a rusty nail rings like a quarter (but not quite)? Or a penny is hard to pinpoint? Or you have to get rid of 7 small rusty nails to get that darn memorial beside them? Are some soils worse than others?
Seems like zinc 1c are bad for moving around and jumpy numbers.
Please educate me.

My understanding, and I may be wrong, is that the halo effect is created when minerals from the metal in the target (coin , nail etc) react with the minerals in the ground. My experience is that differently mineralised soils can create different effects with the same coin (denomination)...it also follows that the longer the metal object is in the ground the more the halo effect can change, depending on how mineralized the ground is....hope this helps.

This question always raises the point of "does it in fact happen"? IMHO I think it does. I think that the above description is correct. i have had times when i have had a good sounding target and found nothing. i have also had times when the pinpoint was way off center, Beale.
