I have this posted in the whazit forum. I found this tonight while out on my third hunt with my new Deus. Looks like someone carved something in the face and I am not sure what the hole was for.

Nice find the hole was for a string to be tied to the coin so it would not be lost oh well lol
..great find.

The 1786 Spanish Silver Half Real is a fantastic find - congrats

Even after the US Mint was up and running - foreign Silver was still accepted ( for it's weight value ) by vendors, local Tax Office's etc.
Many Farmer's - ( at least in our part of the country anyway ) paid their property taxes with foreign Silver coins well into the 1800's.

It was very common to put holes in coins in the old days.
Most pants didn't have pockets so many coins where "Holed" so the owner could put them on a string or thin wire and wear them inside his pants or around the neck.
This was also used as a way to hide coins from thieves.

Myself, I've found approx. 30 to 40 Holed coins - Spanish Silver, almost half of the Large Cents I've dug and even one or two Indian Cents have holes in them.

Good Hunting !
