Had success with a new approach to pinpointing.

Ever since I've had the X-Terra 30, I've always operated under the pretence that I pinpoint using the centre of the coil. Perhaps the graphic on the pinpoint mode has had something to do with that. After swinging the Ace for the last 12 months, I've mostly pinpointed by locating the target under the toe of the inner coil. the penny finally dropped today(been just a little dense). Why not pinpoint with the 30 in the same manner. So I tried it and it worked a treat. although the X-Terra is a round coil, it's simply a matter of waiving the coil back and forth till you lose the signal. The target is directly under the inner coil that last passed over the signal! How easy is that. i can't wait to get out there and go again. Combining that with the VCO to help in identifying coins from screw caps will make a great combination.

Sound like you have a good plan !!!!

Just a different location for the target. With the DD coils, wave the coil back and forth over the target, slowly pull the coil back toward you while waving, and the target will be right off the tip of the coil when the tone stops. Saves time by not switching to the Pinpoint mode! Thanks for the tip on the concentrics Mick. HH Randy

Onya' Mick: If at first you don't succeed, try, try again!. You thought any more about that old police station I told you about???. I would be interested in any news!?. Regards: John, in the wilds of Cootamundra.

G'day John.
I'd better fess up.No I haven't. Getting out of town is a bit tricky for me. I had a couple of weeks off a bit over a month ago and wanted to catch up with my brother over at Rylstone airport, which is only a 2 hour drive away, but was continuously pinned in town, due to family commitments. I can't even hunt in town this weekend as the misses has gone to Sydney with the car for a training weekend with the Scouts. Next week end she's off again to the Parks Telescope with the Joey Scouts and the Weekend after that, we're all off to the Gold Coast for a couple of weeks(at least I can get some detecting time in there!) I''ll get there eventually, I'm just not sure when.
I hope things are going well in sunny Cootamundra.

P.S.Got an Email from my father yesterday. He's doing a course on Australian history at the moment. They are going through the bush ranger era and Captain Thunderbolt got a mention. That made dads ears prick up a bit, as his grand father(John Parkin) who used to own Mt Rodd station in Bingara, claimed to be a personal friend of his. It sure is a small world. One wonders as to what was done with the proceeds of those robberies.

No worries. I sure am interested in the large round DD. It would be a great ad on for beach hunting and ground coverage. I'll be adding one to the detector shortly.

G'day again Mick: Small world indeed, Thunderbolt is buried in the old Uralla cemetery, just across from Uralla Central School where I used to teach, and 600 metres from where I used to live, before Coota'. I believe that most of the proceeds of the robberies would have been spent paying off those people who protected the bushrangers,(I can't imagine a superannuation scheme for bushrangers) although, in the early 1900's, Frank Gardiners son appeared on the scene in Grenfell, and hired a horse and cart, then proceeded up to Mt Wheoga, West of Grenfell, where he did a fair bit of digging. In fact, when I went up there in the early 80's, you could still see some vague depressions in the ground that were not natural. Apparently, Gardiner's son then went back to America. The rest is the subject of conjecture and myth.

Fagan, the driver of the coach, was reasonably well heeled afterwards, at least that's how the story goes around Grenfell. A few K's South of me is a pile of granite up high on a hill that is called Gardiners Lookout, I havn't been up there yet, (finding time is a factor) you sound like you know all about that!.

I once heard of a Chinese bushranger called "Sam Poo", he used to ply his trade on the Mudgee Lithgow road, but that's all I know about him, maybe your dad has heard of him.

See you later Mick. Kindest regards John.

yep i love that DD coil, i used the stock coil on my X50 for about a month then switched to the DD and thats what i have using since.

I'm a mazed at the number of times our paths seem to cross. Sounds like we''ll meet one day. If I can tear myself away from Dubbo at some point and go to Temora with a friend of mine to see a flying day of the Aviation museum, hopefully we can hook up with each other. I might have to buy a second car though.
I rung my dad up and he told me that Sam Poo hadn't come up. He did tell me though, that his grand father was quite wealthy. It seems the the money ran out a long time ago, i.e. when the inheritance was split up.

Hi Mick,
You have got it. I use the eleptical dd all the time on the 70 it never comes off and using it that way it is spot on. And one thing here in the west a lot of the grassed areas they are getting down on you if you make a mess. I had one gardener come up to me and said you can't do that and i replied look i am only using a probe rod and screw driver and i showed him he still said you just can't do that and i replied i do it every day. He went to his truck and called the ranger and 5 minutes later in came the ranger at a hundred mile an hour and he went up to the gardener they had a chat and he came over to me and he said what are you doing and i probed a $2 coin and pulled it out with my forceps no damage to the grass and once he saw that he said go for it. So i give the the gardener the fingers up when i was leaving.

Yeah. I bit the bullet today and bought the round DD coil. It should be here by Friday.
I was finally able to get out for a hunt thisarvo after I dropped the oldest son off to karate. I didn't find any coins, but still had the best hunt with the X 30 that I've had in a long time. Applying the new technique, I found that the X 30 was every bit as accurate as the Ace when pinpointing(whoops. did I say that out loud:lol:).
Don't be too harsh on the gardener. Not all detectorists are as kind on his lawn as you are. I was hunting around a local footy field a couple of months back and was approached by 2 full time league officials. They wanted to know what I was doing to their lawn. When they saw that I only use a screw driver, they left me to it.
