Had Me Worried that my Gt was defective.

Yesterday my Brother-in-law and I made a return trip to a Military Recreation Area. Our last trip we found a number of coins from the 60's but nothing older than 65. We were hopeful that we might find a piece of two of silver. We did collect a few dollars in clad but that was all.

Our first trip there I had a little trouble with EMI when I was near the power lines that service the facility. Yesterday I could not find any place that EMI was not a real problem. I had the SEF 10X12 coil on my GT. I could hear the shallow targets well but there was no way I could hear any targets that were deep. I was really beginning to think that something serious had gone wrong with my GT. Got home, turned on the machine, made a few sweeps across my lawn and it worked perfectly. Talk about being relieved.

My Brother-in-law did not think my problem was EMI as he was not having any problems until I pointed out to him that he was using a much smaller coil on his Gold Bug than what I was using on my GT.

We had planned on doing some wading in the shallow area of the swimming area. I would have stayed shallower than what he would have worked with his Excal. Found that the swimming area was closed due to bacteria levels in the water. The facility is polluted with Geese/Ducks and their feces is everywhere. Since the Air Force is now running a Navy Recreation Area I will blame them for the pollution from the flying pests.

I experienced the same type of problem with EMI with my 12X10 SEF for the places I like to hunt. I can run my 8" CoinSearch at full max sens. and my Tornado 10" about 95% max without problems but that 12X10 I could only run maybe 50% so I sold it. I figure what good is it having a larger coil (other than for extra coverage) if I can't turn the sens up for extra depth? I'd rather run a smaller coil as hot as I can get it and to be honest, I would be happy with just my CoinSearch coil for the kind of depths I see with it. HH George

As many of us that have used the Sovereign for a while and tried some of the different coils have seen what this coil can do. The only problem was they were not waterproof and there was the Seasearch coil that I am told was the waterproof coinsearch and is very hard to find anyone that will sell theirs. The 8 inch Coinsearch in my opinion is the coil I recommend learning the Sovereign with and as the tones are so much easier to hear, once learned going slow and easy and listening close has some of the best depth you will ever see.
The other 8 inch coil I liked and seem to be better in trash was the S-8 of Sun Rays that seem to have a smaller hot band so it was excellent in separation. I have the 10X12 SEF also and haven't took it out to try it yet as been trying to learn my CTX when I get time to get out.

I like the SEF 10X12 as it covers a lot of territory, gives good depth and Is the easiest of all my coils to pinpoint a target. But having said all that it is susceptible to EMI. I have had problems with EMI in a few places that were close or under power lines. However I was surprised at the amount of interference and the distance from the power lines that I was having trouble. Especially when I had not had a whole lot of trouble on my last visit to that Facility.

I visited one city park that I had to use the 8 inch Sunray coil and still had to listen carefully for targets and the EMI was bad. Of course it was directly under large high Voltage power transmission lines. Found quite a few dollars in clad, Two sterling rings and one gold plated ring. It appeared from my finds that the park had never been detected.

I guess that is why we buy different size coils so we can adapt to different situations.
