Had an interesting weekend... and met the Rainman...

Attended two days of special education workshops dealing with school curriculum/policies, inclusion and teaching strategies for people with disabilities and different learning abilities.(I would definitely fall into the last category :)) I was in charge of filming my wife's uncle; Luke's presentation which culminated in a song complete with guitar, and all of us singing. Luke has interesting methods and they work. I learned a lot about the school system, educators and education. I also learned I will be heading into a new career where I'll have to be on guard: I didn't have to worry about being hit on by mechanics, but this weekend being around a bunch of young teachers, I'll just say I'm glad I polished my wedding band. :)
The real interesting part was when, at lunch I heard that the guest speaker would be the Rainman. I also got my picture taken with the oscar or emmy(the gold one shaped like a person) It was about 10lbs. While drinking free cofee in the lobby, the Rainman came up to me and said," I don't think I have met you yet." I stood up to introduce myself and he said," Look into my eyes, when you meet someone it is important to see them to learn more." I introduced myself and he put his hands on my shoulders and his head against mine and started humming. I was a bit perplexed. I didn't know if this was what he normally does since I hadn't seen him greet anyone else this way. I figured this was a way someone who does not reason; the Rainman, might greet another and feel their energy. Well the energy was getting pretty up close and personal. I then thought it probably looked strange to others. (my mom worked with autistic and retarded children for 20yrs, so i do know that other peoples perceptions don't mean the same to them) Well I didn't want to offend him or other educators who maybe used to this behavoir, so I thought fast. The Rainman seemed to think by association. At the lunch, the audience would mention a place, time, or event and he would ramble off what he knew of it. I quickly said, I'm originally from ......., CT and he commenced to tell me some of the history and regained a more comfortable distance. I wish I had asked him some metal detecting questions :) Anyway life is wonderful and many times downright strange.:sadwalk:

definitely a good idea Ev!!! Wish i'd be there with you. There is a bend in the river with a pull off on the left if you are going toward the bridge from Kent.It is not far from the Hous. meadows park. A few foundations in the area and also have not tried the field across from the fly shop yet
hmmmmm, might be worth it ;)

It's pretty lax up there and wouldn't see it being a problem.People play horseshoes there and have been picnicing for years, not to mention farming. The woods acsoss the way are intewresting too and should hold a few goodies! Let me know how you make out. I have eyed the field but usually pick an old cellar hole instead, it should be interesting what you find. Just be careful in Sharon on town land. There is a no detecting ordinance :frown:
