Good evening all! Managed to get out for a nice 4 hour hunt with my buddy. We drove around for about 45 minutes trying to find a spot to hunt that we've never hit before. We stumbled upon a nice campground that appears hasn't been used for some time. Overgrowth everywhere! My buddy was doing great with his Bounty Hunter. He found a 1937 and 1942 mercs, a no-date buffalo nickel and 8 wheaties. I was getting pretty discouraged because all my XLT was finding was clad. About 3 hours into the hunt I finally got my first wheat. I went back to an area where the signals were few and far between, but did pull some older relics from this area in the beginning of the hunt. I hunted around a modern fire-pit and found 3 tokens. I then came across a quarter signal about 5 inches deep. Kept praying for silver. After I removed the dirt, I swung the detector of the hole and it disappeared. It must be in the dirt! Looked around and found a flat piece of stainless steel about the size of a nickel. What a let down, but whats this... I see writing on it. Holy sh!t its a spanish 1 Reale!!! Worn nearly smooth on both sides, but I can see the bust and the shield with pillars on the back. Damn these things are thin! I got it home, put it under the microscope in hopes of seeing a well worn date. Alas, there it is! 1783
This has been a goal coin of mine for 9 years now. I found a half reale about 4 years ago but it also is worn thin with only the crown visible on the reverse. This one is a little better condition and has a date that can be seen under the microscope. I finished off the day finding another wheatie and then the mosquitos got to us so we called it quits.
All in all, a great day out!
