G'day all.
Happy new year.
I had a good opportunity to hunt while visiting family down in Sydney over the last week. Most of the hunts went pretty well with some personal records smashed.
I had originally planed a more conservative hunt schedule, but as I was doing better than expected, I had several days extra in which to improve on what I had already found.
The first couple of days had hunts conducted by simply walking to some local parks and ovals. One park in particular, proved most rewarding, in that it had an ampitheature tucked away from sight from the road. It produced around $55 over 3 hunts. On the third hunting day, I arose at the ridiculous time of 3am so that I could hunt Bondi beach (as access is very difficult). Although my clad finds were pretty woefully for the hunt (4 hours) I did find my first mobile phone, which was in working order 9handed into the lifeguard at sun up) and got to met a fellow detectorist. As I very rarely meet other detectorists at play, it was time for a chat. It turns out, that this fellow lives in the same Sydney suburb that I used to, and that he was able to give me some valuable beach hunting tips. Although I found only $7.80 for the hunt, this meeting was of far more value to me, as it is always good to meet a kindred mind.
I think that it was the next day that really blew me away. i decided to go bark chipping for this hunt, so the sniper coil came along as well. My very first target, turned out to be a spill of 3 $2 coins within 12 inches of each other. From there it only got better. After stopping for the morning, and only 2.5 hours of hunting, I had found over $48! That has been my highest find rate ever. However, this hunting day was not over. After going with the family down to Cronulla beach for the day, I stayed back to do some night beach hunting. I decided on this occasion, to dig wide pinpoints as well as the usual coin sounding pinpoints. After recovering 32 coins, I found that although the pinpoint usually told me whether to dig or not, 2 $1 coins gave a wide pinpoint and 1 $2 coin gave a non descript pinpoint! So from that, I can see why the GTI uses say that your coin count will be higher with with the sizing coil. I also found a US 1 cent coin on this hunt, only my fourth US coin that I have found. I seemed to be on fire on this hunt as well, so I set a target of $100 for the day. It looked like I may have actually got there, but for the last few hours, I hardly found any coins. As there were lovers spilling onto the beach, I pulled the pin on the hunt with a new personal record for a one day hunt of $86.50.
The next day was a lay day, but the one after that, I'd set sights for a new record of 200 for the week (only needed around $16 to achieve it).As I'd planned a lawn hunt, I left the sniper coil behind; a decision that I came to regret. The place that I had selected, Although, it has regular community events held on it, the ground was as hard as nails, and it had the wrong sort of grass to trap coins. So in the end, I went bark chipping at spots that I'd previously hunted. These particular spots have produced a good quantity of coins in the past, but each spot had been recently hunted. Had I had the sniper coil, I feel that I could have turned these back into halfway descent hunts. After a painfully slow day, I finally hit target after 6 hours.
On new years eve, I got up early and hunted at a pool that I'd previously hunted. After 3 hours, it gave up $29. One high light on this hunt came when I got a signal which came in at notch 7 (where our $1 and $2 coins come in at). I couldn't get a clear pinpoint, but decided to persist to see what would happen. After a fair bit of maneuvering, I finally got a clean pinpoint and up came a $2 coin. I checked the ground again, and there was still a signal. I pulled up 3 $2 coins and 1 $1 coin out of this spot. How sweet was that. Later that morning, I went bark chipping again, but with the sniper coil attached. Boy, did that little coil impress. While hunting around metal, I dial up full sensitivity and hunt with the pinpoint button on! I also tilt the coil a little bit away from the metal I'm hunting next to. This coil just kept pulling up coins that are normally unreachable!
In all I smashed my previous record with a total of $252.25, which brought the Ace's total for the year to $622.86.
Finds were as follows: $2 x 79.
$1 x 61
50 cents x 19.
20 cents x51
10 cents x 59
5 cents x 54
2 cents x 2 (no longer in circulation.)
1 cents x 5 (no longer in circulation)
New Zealand 20 cents x 3
New Zealand 10 cents x 2.
Hong Kong 10 cents x 2 ( these were the first coins from Hong Kong that I've found.)
US 1 cents x 1
1 mobile phone
1 earing
4 x die cast cars (3 of which I threw away.)
I'll post the pictures when the family gets back in a couple of weeks.
Happy new year everybody.
