Guys I just joined your forum as a new owner of an Explorer II older unit

Should get in the mail in about 4 days. I'll have lots of questions and sure would appreciate your advise as a newbie to the Explorer 2.

I have been detecting for about 10 years. Never been minelabed yet!:wiggle: But I'm ready for test!,. I am using a CZ7a right now and enjoy it, have used Whites , Garrets, Bounty Hunter, Tek2, Tek Turbo's, Mark I, and several other RS detectors.
It took me about a year to learn my GTI 2500, I also own a Ace 250 nice detector... I may be sorry I sold the GTI 2500, but it was just time for me to try something new.Barry in Australia will be Gold hunting with the 2500, he's getting it in the mail today and I know he'll be on the Garrett board trying to figure out the curve on that one!. Great machine Garrett built! I chose the Mine lab Explorer 2 because everyone says it's a good detector, Hard to learn, but most appreciate it's capabilities.
I'll have plenty of questions in the future if you guys don't mind. For now if you seasoned guys were me where would you recommend I start?

Thanks for any and all replies I appreciate your knowledge and wisdom!
Thanks for the help!

you keep everyting at the factory preset settings until you familiarize yourself with the machine. I would also suggest starting out with a smaller coil to familiarize yourself with the multitude of tones the machine makes. You don't want to have too many sounds passing under the coil at the same time. The most important thing is to go ssslllooowwww...just take your time and listen to the sounds first....then check the smartfind screen.
Trying to do too much too quickly will lead to frustration...so just take your time.

You sound like an experienced detectorist so take this with good intentions. When I got my Explorer XS after being a Fisher CZ user I was told by mentors to put my Explorer in Iron Mask at -10, set fast and deep to on, use conductive sounds, turn my threshold tone down to 3, variability up to 10 and set sensitivity manually somewhere around 20 (I got a feel for where to go - up or down - after a few outings). Throw down some of your old coins to get an idea as to what they sound like under you coil and then go detecting. I was told to LEAVE IT ALONE (except for sensitivity) and detect until I knew what it was telling me. After about three weeks I was pretty comfortable with using my machine - and I was digging oldies out of my pounded parks like I had never done before. I make a few changes now and then, but not too many.

Start in quickstart until you get the feeling for it. Raise sensitivity to about 20 and of course threshold to your liking and believe me quickstart in its own right is a good mode..Next get a silver dime, quarter, and nickle and run it pass your coil until the tones are imbedded in your brain. Swing slow and at first dig a lot so would recommend a beach where the digging is easy. Don't go fast or get fancy but just go slow and all will fall into place. Manual and Andy's book are a big help so read each several times. In addendum a trip or two out with an experienced Explorer user will shorten your learning period. A lot of knowledgeable guys on the forum and they will help and remember no dumb questions just guys too dumb to ask them...

Dear KCK I am about to recieve a used Explorer II myself and no doubt will have many questions that need answering. It might be a good idea for us to keep in touch to this effect.

Best regards,

Dave Mills

First day I wanted to trash it....but then I dug everything the second day and my experience with a GTI 2500 helped to! I even found a Gold 465.00 class ring which I'll be returning this week I hope to the original owner!
I think you'll love the Explorer, I've used a lot of detectors, I evenb got a Mark I in mail this week and I have always loved the Tek models.

Minelab's Explorer reminds me a lot of the old Teks in the way they sounded, only much much deeper!

Let me know how your doing once you get it in Brother!

I ran a GTI 2500 for about a year and 1/2. Great machines both of them. But not near this Explorer........Sweet!
I've used lots of other machines in the last ten years. Recently sold a T2....nice machine ...super light! Just didn't talk my language.....I never thought I would ever own a MineLab...Much less an Explorer II. Just thought they were way over priced! But now I'm not so sure? My back is killing me cause of the deeper holes and more finds. If you go home with a sore back you've done well!
It may just be happenstance the Gold Ring.....But if they start popping out more often.....I might have to buy me a back up Minelab and sell some stuff!

I hear what your telling me brother , I'll take it to heart. Slowing down is a must. I appreciate your words of wisdom and will adhere to the knowledge you've shared with me tonight Good neighbor! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks

Used both off and on and have to give the edge to the Explorer in overall performance as it just gives more info before you dig but have to say lots of good units out there and as one fellow said heck
sell or don't buy an Explorer as if you are in my area just more for me to find...By the way have used multiple units over the years and no perfect unit but an Explorer is a silver magnet of sorts...
