Gulf Hunter Had to send my Ex cal. ll back

Floridabill

New member
Thanks for all your help but found out I had some issues with mine. I think it was bad from the time I got it from Kellyco, but never having one I wasn't too familiar with it and just thought maybe that how they were. I was having second thoughts that I made a mistake getting rid of the beachunter I had.

But a friend and I went out to Boca Grande today and I was telling him what mine was doing. He tried it and said it was screwed up. He then let me try his and I noticed a big difference. He has the older model. I have the new coil he has the old. I was getting all kinds of false signals and if I hit the ground in or out of the water it would sound off. Then if I hit iron it would null then go to that very loud tone and never return to normal until I swept the coil across my scoop.

Then today I noticed as I was hunting a cut in the bank every time I hit the bank it would go off. The auto never worked and just went crazy from the time I tried to turn it on. I don't hunt in auto so it wasn't any big deal. Today I also noticed if I hit the coil anywhere on it with my hand then it would sound off, so something is messed up. So it's on it's way back, hope they find the problem and return it quickly so I can get hunting with my new diamond scoop....

Sorry to here you are having problems Floridabill. My new Excal II arrived on Tuesday. It is ready for a trip to the beach tomorrow. It seems to be OK. Runs like my old Excal, just a little more sensitive. Let us know what they find wrong.

I just read your post and I was surprised to hear that your Excal II was going back and that you described a similar event that I have had with mine.

My Excal II will sound off when I accidentally "bump" my coil into something, I thought that was how they were too, and the "growl" after hitting iron, I also thought was normal.

Hopefully you and GH will see my post and explain what was wrong with your machine so I can take appropriate action, although I have not found my machine to be malfunctioning and feel that it has worked well (I've recovered a gold ring, a silver bracelet and a bunch of clad) I really didn't think my machine was broke but now I'm wondering.

Feel free to PM me with a list of your problems so that I might compare with you and also let me know what Minelab's thoughts are.

Sorry to hear that it was unresolvable Bill. Now is when you will find out about your dealer support. Get Kellyco to call ahead and get you prioritized, so that you will not be mired in the pile of failures ahead of you. Many times, if the dealer calls ahead for you, they can get your issues expedited. It certainly is not unreasonable, since YOU have been inconvenienced. I ASSURE YOU, that Minelab WILL repair the unit and all this will be a distant memory. Give them a call and see if they can help get this issue prioritized. I would be interested to hear how this all turns out for you Bill and so sorry that you had an issue.

My first Excal II was defective right out of the box,.

My local dealer didn't discover it until I arrived to take delivery, He placed a call and had Minelab overnight a replacement for me, so it can be done.

I am not to happy with Kellyco right now, I have bought two detectors there along with several other items and always received good service.

My friend said why not call Kellyco they should correct the problem because apparently the unit was bad from the start and they should just send you another one instead of waiting the time for Minelab to fix it as its only been a month. I thought good idea.

I called and asked for the person who I bought it from and was told he was off could they help me. I explained what was going on and could I just send that one to them minus the shaft and they can send me another one and the answer I received was "No we don't do that you have to send it back to Minelab. We don't even open them, we get them from the factory and then just send them out so it's Minelabs problem. I said okay well if that is the case how did Kellyco's sticker get on the inside of the box. He said oh we open them to put the pinpointer in there. I said I didn't get a pinpointer! He then said well all I can say is that's why and you need to call minelab with what I would say was a attuide at this point.

So with that being said I called minelab and was told to ship it back and they would look at it. Which I did (cost me $17.00 because I was never informed of a pre-paid UPS Call Tag for returns of new or nearly new machines ) and then received this email

"Hi Bill:

Okay, we

Thats bad news. I bought mine from a local dealer (who I suspect is not a forum sponsor) and although I am sure I may have paid a higher price than an internet buyer, I was able to leave the store with my machine in hand, and he installed my straight shaft, and said he ALWAYS opens the box and "test drives" the machine to insure everything is in good working order.

I'm not sure where you are in Florida but if you are near Broward I will gladly provide you a PM with his information.........I wont say he would take a machine off his wall to replace one that I've had in my hands for a month (but it wouldn't surprise me either) I'll bet he would go above and beyond to make my situation right.

There is a Kellyco employee, I think her name is Wanda that I've seen a post or two from that might be able to explain Kellyco's position with a little more compassion. I read she intends on being at the Florida get together in a couple months if you are interested in reaching out to her.........I've never spoken to her but from the few posts of hers I've seen. she seems like a decent enough person and may be able to cut through some red tape at Minelab for you.....just a thought.

Keep us posted on the progress of your machine, and I'll try and post something of the outcome with mine later in the week.

I heard from Dan Gerrell Kellyco Metal DetectorsDirector of eCommerce and IT who assured me that he would speak to the rep that gave me the information. I told him I didn't want anyone to get in any trouble over this, but next time maybe the rep will handle it a little better.

I have always had good luck with them and have been dealing witrh them since the early 80's, so I was a little disappointed in the treatment I received.

But I can say he was very sincere and said he will make sure things are done correctly for me, and that's all I can ask. I received a reply from this company and I am happy with the results.

I felt it was important to give them their credit in trying to correct & resolve any problems I had which I feel they did.....

Yes, I have to give credit to them for correcting the problem and staying on top of this for me. It was my own fault in a way for being in a rush, the wonderful guys I have dealt with in the past were off so I talked to a rep who apparently was really not aware of certain things and didn't have the power to authorize anything like that.

They have already called and emailed me several times and have also contacted Mine lab to put it on priority. That is all I can ask for and wasn't looking for anything other than that....

Now you guys have me wandering. My unit does the same thing. If it touches the dry sand it may go off, if it touches the sand in water, it will go off, if it comes out of the water, it goes off. Being new, I just figured it was the way it's suppose to be. The other day, it was not as bad. I have been finding a lot of things with it, bottle caps, pull tabs, cell phone, sunglasses and coins, but after reading all this, I am wandering if it's right. But I am finding things, the false alarms are annoying and I have to re confirm all beeps.

A wise Excal user ( Gulf Hunter ) was of the opinion that my machine has not performed as bad as Floridabills machine, and convinced me that Bill and I do NOT have the same level of problem as it sounds.

My Excal II will sound off and if I'm not paying attention to what I'm doing and I will think that I have a target when I don't..................GulfHunter told me that Bill's problem was a constant instability, which mine was not.

Maybe he will see that we are still sweating this topic and put your mind at rest, as he has mine, or throw him a PM and describe your experience and he might tell you to take it in and have someone look at it.

Whatever he suggests I would say take it to the bank. His posts on the Excal. have been very helpful to me and I have imposed upon him a number of times for advice and suggestions and he has had the patience of a saint.

My Ex. cal. is finally on the way back, I received this reply when I asked what they found. Made me better knowing that there was some issues and it wasn't me. Don't know too much about the electronics part of these I was informed that the pcboard is like the mother board, so I guess it did have some real issues. Thanks Gulf Hunter & 954 and others for the help...

"we replaced coil, pcboards, strain relief, cable, endcap, boot.
Robert"
