Guess It's True - Gold "IS" Where You Find It

Got a gracious invite from Joe in Ca to come out for a visit..arrived Sunday the 7th and stayed until the 11th of Oct. First let me say what a gracious host Joe was... Tuesday the 9th we planned a trip up into the mountains to a SECRET spot ..boy was it ever !!! The weather there was PERFECT !!! especially compared to the high humidity of Texas... just a perfect day from the beginning to end. We made our way up into the mountains and at first glance of the old delapidated house I knew this was gonna be a fun day. Then got glimpse of the OUTHOUSE out back..still standing and in good shape. It appears someone had beat us to the outhouse though cuz there was a HUGE hole under the seat..someone had done some serious digging..one only wonders what may have been under there. We continued to hit the whole area hard finding lots of iron pieces..Joe found what appeared to be an old pot cover...very large and heavy..will try to get some pics and post that later. Now for the piesta resistance' !!!!! I followed an old covered up trail up towards the hillside. As I made my way to the base of the hill..scanning across the path covering both sides I got a very loud solid hit...changed my MXT over to prospecting mode to check for iron content and it read 10% so as any good detectorist I DUG !!! I took my digging knife scraping the top layer of dirt slowly away..got down to almost 2 inches and saw a glitter of something....I immediately stopped and decided to dig all around it and bring up the soil in the middle...as I did guess what popped out onto the ground...a GOLD NUGGET !!! crystaline gold with quartz matrix attached to it..and VERY HEAVY !!! I was sooooooo stoked !!! I hollared over to Joe to come over to where I was, he said hold on he was tuning in on a spot he was digging..I said "Joe, you need to come NOW". He came over and I told him to hold out his hand...as I plopped the nugget into his hand..he let out with some words I cant repeat...something like HOLY $&^% !!!! Well needless to say we both worked the area well over but never found anything else. He had told me this area was a gold mining area from the 1800s from his research. As best as I can guess ..someone may have dropped it and over time got covered up. We worked the area over some more for a good 2 hours, alas no more good finds...but this gave us plenty to talk about. We left that spot and hit a beach area for a while, lots of mineralization in the sand ..really gave our detectors fits...Joe did come up with a silver earring with some nice red stones perhaps garnet or ruby. Then worked our way to a some huge volleyball courts, with minimal luck there..boy was I disappointed in that ..volleyball courts are my favorite area to work. But after all that..the day was just a perfect day for detecting. I got to make a new friend, we shared some good stories and perhaps we can do this again real soon. Thanks again Joe for such a perfect day of detecting.

HH to all !!!
