GTI 2500

I have had my GTI 2500 for about two months now and have gotten pretty familiar with the machine. Up until I got it I was merely coin shooting and now I am ready to go for some of the deeper targets. Problem is that I have dug several 6 to 10" holes showing coins at that depth and come up with nothing or a rusty nail! I seem to be having trouble with anything below 4". Anything at 4" or shallower it nails like a pointing dog! I have tried two diffferent sites which I know has not been detected and should contain some silver coins but so far I have come up empty. I don't know whether I am having trouble pinpointing those deep targets or if it's the machine. I get a ton of signals that say something like E5 at 12" and I know that there ae not that many targets at that depth that size. Any suggestions?

Sound like you might not be getting the target exactly centered under your search coil before you are looking at the size reading. If you don't have your target directly centered up under the search coil then you will get a size reading that is larger than the target really is.

Pinpointing on the GTI's can take a little getting used to since they can auto-tune while you are pinpointing and make the target sound louder and also show up with a higher signal strength. I have found that it can take a little longer to pinpoint with the GTI's than with other detectors but that you really need to do it in order to get an accurate size and depth reading.

When I first started with a GTI I would run into the same thing you describe. Where I would dig down and not find anything, but then I would re-pinpoint the target and found out that I had missed it (with my hole) by several inches.

So spend some extra time pinpointing and make sure you spend enough time at it so that the detector can auto-tune and settle down. In fact you might want to pinpoint the target twice from two directions (if you are facing north the firs time you pinpoint then move around so you are facing west) and see if the spots you pinpoint match before you dig.

Hope my 2 cents worth are helpful - good luck and HH!

To add to Steve's post - centering the target correctly on the GTI's is critical for correct readings. As you attempt to center your target watch the cursors at the top of the display ( signal strength indicator ) and when they line up all the way across - your target will be under the center hole in the coil. Also, if you're hunting in grass a few inches deep, check out to the sides of the spot you have centered as these coils will pick up coins from the side of the coil-that are laying on the ground at the base of the grass.
