GTI 2500 Technical Question

I was curious as to what the actual technical difference between All Metal and Discriminate modes on the GTI 2500. I asked the helpful folks at Garrett and got a few operational differences and after I explained I was interested in a techy answer I got this response:

"Any time you are in any discrimination mode (including zero-discrimination) you are in a digital mode. The indicator on the middle left side of your

display tells you that you are in

Well here is my take on the Question. The detector runs at 7 kHz no matter if you are in discriminate mode or all metal. The big difference between the two modes is the discriminate mode needs motion of the coil to work. And as Garrett said is a digital signal. When using this mode some depth is lost by discriminating out targets. And also as Garrett said the all metal mode is a analog signal that is processed and read as a digital signal. This mode needs no motion in the coil for it to be run you can hover it over a target and get a response. Because there is no discrimination in this mode it runs deeper. Also in this mode you need to ground balance the unit or use the fast track mode which will ground balance it for you which also can give you some added depth in bad soil.As far as the workings of the processor vs the computer end of the detector that would be the secrets of the Garrett Gods!!!!!!!

I am slowly putting the pieces of the puzzle together in my mind.

Are high end gold detectors generally analog machines? They usually operate at higher frequncies right?

Thanks Terry.

Chris

Hey Chris,
Garretts explaination seems pretty good to me.

Concerning your question about gold detectors, Most are higher frequencies to find sub grain pieces of gold. The higher the frequency the smaller nugs can be found. And yes most are analog excpet the Minelab PI's GPX are digital.

The GTI 2500 will find nuggs down to about 0.3 grams. I have found one myself. But smaller than that you need higher frequency detector...ex...scorpion, gold bug, Whites gold master, etc...

Yeah I wish they would put an adjustable multi ftrequency on the 2500 so one could switch to 10 khz or 15 khz to nail those tiny nuggies.

Thanks for the reply. The gold detector question was a side thought but at least my instincts were right. I live in NY and there isn't much gold to be found although I read a few stories about a guy who is washing small amounts of gold from between very large rocks out in Western NY. I found a very small .42 g 10k gold ring this past weekend which sounded off like a klaxon. It was about 2 inches down in bark chips. Every time I use my 2500 I am more and more impressed with it.

If my memory serves your nugget was about 7 grams?

Chris

So Bill. What actually changes when you change the frequency on the 2500? How much? I understand there is not any benefit from one frequency to another as far as performance goes but it is only helpful if there is electrical interference in the area. Possibly from power lines or another detector.

Chris

The frequency change is only for crosstalk between detectors and electrical interference. It changes nothing in performance because it is so minimal.

Bill

Thank for that insight I am new to hunting and have the 2500. I use discriminate in coin or jewelry and sometimes all metal but it goes alittle crazy. I am not sure if I have the ground balancing on though..I swear i have read the manual 10 times and keep learning more but your info is very helpful!!
