Gti-2500 problems

I need some advice about my 2500 GTI. I put fresh batteries in it and checked that I had them installed correctly. I am having a problem with the top cursor going all over the place back and forth and sounding off. I checked the coil for dirt and my coil connections. I was under a power line and adjusted the frequency until it was better but the 12 inch imaging coil was sounding off ever time I moved it. It was doing this the last time I used it and I thought it was the headphones. I used the reset button about 10 times, but either there's a lot of small metal fragments in this area or I have a problem. Whether it's an operator problem or coil or gti unit problem, I don't know. I have had this problem before, but just in some areas. Now, it's driving me crazy. I checked each of the batteries and they had a full charge on them and I'm using the store bought instead of rechargeables. The coil is snug around the stem. When I previously tried to tape the coil to the stem shaft, it sounded off all the time. You more experienced detector folks got any advice. I used it at factory setting after reset and tried adjusting the threshold, sensitivity, etc. Help. I got permission to metal detect this house that is about 70 years old and I want to try and hit it hard tommorrow.

Sounds like the same problem I had several years ago. I sent the 2500 back with 12 inch coil. Garrett replace the coil and I haven't had a problem since. Change back to the 9 inch coil and try that. It may not be the machine but just the coil ,good luck.

It could be that it needs to be set back to default...hold the on/off button until it beeps (about 10 seconds)

It could be one of your batteries is dead or has reverse polarity.

Is your sensitivity too high? Turn it down some.

Could be a coil issue. Try a different coil. Fixed? Bad coil Not fixed? Electronics.

Remove coil cover and remove all the sand, grit etc and wipe down with a damp cloth

Run it at a different location. There are a couple of places where there are some underground cables running, and my machines all run erratic, exactly as you describe. You will have to run it at the lowest sensitivity setting, or find another place to hunt.

Still a problem? Call Garrett and you may have to send it in. :(

Strange that you should bring up the polarity,
I had a clock quit working, I pulled the battery's and checked them, the first one was ok,
the second one had reverse polarity, wonder what caused this ??
It was not like that when I installed them..

" I was under a power line "<> That could be a problem for lots of units, find a place with no EMI and not to many targets in the ground and try that 12" coil again.

Sounds like a bad coil, you can call Garrett at 1-800-527-4011

Fongu...... I had the 2500 for several months before having a need for the large coil, then when I did try to use it in a large field with no power lines or other interference it would give all kinds of erratic signals. Like you, I tried all the recommended remedies, then called Garrett. They sent me a new coil and I sent the old one back in the same box. Problem solved. Using the larger coil, even with no mineralization, requires the sensitivity to be turned down quite a bit, which would appear to me to negate the advantages of a deeper reaching coil. In trashy areas, forget it. Good luck. Jugg

I used the factory reset, checked the polarity of the batteries and it was correct. Checked the batteries one by one with the radio shack battery tester and they were all at 1.5 volts each. cleaned the coil and checked the plug in for bent or broken pins. The 9.5 coil works, but I have decided to send the entire head and both coils to garrett to check it out and be ready for warmer weather. Thanks for all the advice. The old place I want to hunt is littered with trash from illegal dumps and it's growed up with saplings pretty bad. so, I plan to get a sniper coil that I have been putting off buying and use it when I get the unit back from garrett. Thanks everybody for your time and advice. Found a great deer trail and while looking around I found where some nimrod had poured peanuts and corn in several places to bait the deer. I won't be back until after deer season anyway. I guess I was just lucky that the day I went it was raining. All I could feel when I found the baited areas was a scope reticle on my back. Y'all be careful out there.

fongu, Let me know what you find out. I also own a 2500 and love it. Never had those issues with mine with the large coil.

I plan to send it off Thursday and as soon as they call me and let me know something, I'll post it or email you.
