GTI 2500 on the way!

I've wanted to try a GTI 2500 for a while, and now I have one on the way. I'm pretty pumped about that. I have a couple of questions about the coils.

Are coil covers necessary, or are the coils rugged enough? If necessary, what is a good source for both the 9.5 and the 12.5 covers?(I've been having trouble finding the cover for the larger coil)

The small 4.5 sniper coil is non-imaging, but does the graphical display showing probable target still function? Am I correct in my understanding that with the small sniper coil there will be no depth indication?

Thanks,

Dan

Coil covers? The new Proformance coils are built TOUGH! Check with some of the sponsors of this forum, or try http://www.garrett.com/hobby/howtobuy.asp . The small 4 1/2 " sniper coil doesn't size a target but it does give a targets conductivity (ID) and depth. Of course with a coil that size, it's a pretty good guess as to a targets size anyways. If you hunt along rocky areas or a lot on beaches, a coil cover would protect the integrity of the coil itself. But for hunting grass areas like parks and school yards, I don't think you have to have one. If you have any other questions, just ask. There are a lot of GTI 2500 users on this forum.

Thanks John. I will be hunting grassy areas primarily, so maybe I'll skip the covers. Thanks for the info on the sniper. How is the 2500 in dense trash? I was thinking about keeping my Tesoro with the 5.75" coil for dense trashy school yards, but if the 4.5" sniper coil will cut through like a knife, maybe I'll end up getting rid of the Tesoro.

I'm sure I'll have a few questions. This won't be my first Garrett. I had a Freedom 2 Plus, and a GTA1000 many years ago, and an Ace250 more recently. Looking forward to getting back to a Garrett product, especially one this high-end.

No coil cover needed unless you're going to use it as a club. It's poured epoxy and tough as nails. The Sniper is non-imaging but works like all the other coils display wise. Pinpointing with it is a piece of cake. You got yourself the Cadillac of detectors. Be looking forward to pics of your finds. Depth in all metal is scary. Good luck.

Just to add what the other guys posted..the 5x10 coil is awesome in trashy areas and is extremly stable in hot ground being a DD. It is actually fairly small coil...only 1/2 in wider than the 4.5 sniper but covers more ground. Ive been using it in trashy areas for coin hunts because I dont have a sniper and the 5x10 doesnt go quite as deep as the stocker so I can concentrate on 1-4 inch coin depth without having to dig big holes....Only need coil covers if you detecting over rocky areas as in creeks with alot of rocks.Looking forward to hearing from you about the hunts with the 2500. U will love it!

Thanks for all the encouraging words. This is going to be a great detecting year.

How is the 5x10 DD coil for pinpointing? Is it easy to pinpoint off the tip?

I had an Ace 250 and upgraded to a 2500 around 10/1/07. I love it! I ran primarily in the discriminate mode for those 2 months but when I tried out the all metal mode I found items very, very deep. Unfortunately they were mostly junk. I reckon it will be great on the beach.

FWIW. In answer to your coil cover question I have a pretty good sized chip on one side of my stock coil. I have no idea how it got there or when. It's a probaly 3/8 of an inch long and less that 1/8 inch deep. It kind of bugged me when I first noticed it but I just went to look at it and had a hard time finding it. I think when all the boys are putting epoxy on the hull of their boats in the spring I might try some on the bottom of my coil. I still don't fancy using a coil cover.

I need to get a sniper coil for mine so I look forward to hearing about your experience with it. I've done a fair bit of reading on it and it is going to be one of my next major purchaes along with a Vibraprobe 570.

Please post pics of what you find. There are a lot of helpful posters on this forum should you require help.

Yeah that's the way to pinpoint with a DD since they have no receiver for pinpointing. They detect as deep at either end as they do everywhere else.
