GTI-2500 got a bath at the river-underarmor works great

I went down to the river today and my underarmor long johns work great, but my feet froze. The water was about 6 inches below my housing and I was digging a target and this pontoon boat came by close to shore and sent a 2 foot wave right over the top of my unit. I turned it up in the air to try and drain the water off and kept using it, but could see moisture inside the case. It was hanging at an angle on my sling and the water just drowned it. I'm hoping it will be okay. I found out the water is so high, I can't get far from the shore, about 3 feet. If I want to work the river very much, I may have to get either an AT/Pro or one of the other waterproof detectors. For the time being, I will just look around the lake and work the shallow areas that are public. I found 42 cents in clad, 3 dimes and 12 pennies. Happy New Year and happy hunting to all of you. I was surprised to see all the boats on the water today and they seemed to give it the gas when they came by my location. Probably mad because I was dirt fishing and they were not. lol I found out today it's a lot harder working in deeper water than shallow. The pain is almost as bad as when I dirt fish on land. All in all, I had a great day and hope my unit drys out and has no damage.

Yeah! Good to see you got out and gave it a go!:clapping: You work those shallow areas for a while and let your machine and back take a break!
Hard to even put on socks when your back hurts. The pain goes away once the signals start showing up?

Oh man, that totally sux that your machine got dunked. Sorry to hear that.:( At least it's not salt water, but it could still be damaged. of course DO NOT turn it on until you're sure that it's completely dried out. If I were you I'd call Garrett's and ask what to do about it.
I use to always keep a samich bag tied over the control box.(pofolks control box cover)That mighta helped.
My 2500 burned up in the shed during the wildfires here in Texas Summer '11 :nopity:
Maybe somebody else'll chime in with some help. Might have to send in in to the 'tector doctor.
Best of luck to ya. Hope your machine is still working.

I have heard of people getting their Cell phones wet,,,and putting them in a bag of rice,,,the Rice draws the moisture out,,,,you might try getting the control head in a lot of Rice....
But do not turn the unit on until you are sure it is dried out....:garrett:

I think I will let it dry out for a couple days and touch base with Garrett to see if I need to do anything to it or just leave it alone until it dries out. I have a moisture cover to protect the face, but it aggravates me and I didn't have it on. Another lesson learned and I hope I got lucky with it. I'll know tomorrow.
Happy New Year and happy hunting. I ate enough black-eyed peas, collard greens, corn bread and bbq'd fresh ham to kill me today, just so I would have good luck in the new year.

I would pull the batteries and replace them with some of those little dessicant pouches you get when you buy shoes and stuff. Then leave it somewhere very warm, like over a heat register or near a wood stove or something. Just not tooo close. You want the unit to be warm enough to get all the moisture evaporated and airborn so the dessicant can soak it up. If it stays cool, it'll never dry out.
Best of luck with it!

Well, I'm going to try this again my first reply got deleted.
I must of hit the wrong button again and bam it was gone.
Most of what I said, in the first reply was surrounding the fact
of, if the river remains in your future then you're probablly going
to have to opt out of your current detector and buy an AT/Pro.

Wish You the best HH and Happy New Year!

I dried my unit out and put the batteries back in and fired it up and it seems to be okay. No moisture is showing anywhere. Thank the good Lord I seemed to dogged the bullet on this incident. Rest assured I will be more careful in the future. I hope to go to the river tomorrow in a different location and I will know for sure if it's okay. I just powered it up and off a couple times today. I definitely want an AT-Pro, but have no dough. I've been looking after my brother and his wife's house and dogs this week while his wife was in the hospital. She is supposed to come home tomorrow and I hope I can get to the river after they get in. If she's too sick, I may have to stay close to home in case my brother needs me. Otherwise, I'm going dirt fishing.
My brother's wife was diagnosed with anal cancer a few weeks before Christmas and this is her first week of chemo and I'm praying for her complete recovery.

best wishes to the brother and his wife...i dunked my Tesoro conquistador umax once, jerked the batteries out , let it dry a couple of days and it was fine.stepped on a slick rock that day, now have a tigershark for water hunting...read somewhere that if u power off immediately and take the batteries out that water wont harm printed circuits, its when u try to power up wet circuits boards that things go amiss

Thanks, CW
I went back to the river for 2 hours last Friday and found 28 cents, but the ID didn't seem to be working as good as before. Might have been the operator instead of the machine. I wasted a lot of time digging junk I usually don't bother with. My mind was somewhere else at the same time.
I probably will get a water unit myself in the near future. HH
