GTI 2500 12 inch imaging coil question.

I asked a question on another thread which didn't get answered so here it is again. I realize my posts lean toward the long side and sometimes my questions are buried deep within.

I tried out the 12 inch imaging coil last Saturday and found that the target ID on the machine was not accurate. For instance a quarter rang up on the dime spot, dimes rang up below penny. I had the targets centered pretty well and imaging gave fairly accurate depth and nailed the size on everything I dug. I dug a little enameled heart pendant that fluctuated from below penny to penny that was good and deep. I imagine on all metal mode this thing will probe deeper than I am prepared to dig. I have one real clean outfield that I am eager to use it on in discriminate mode.

What is your experience with the 12 inch imaging coil and target ID? Should I change any settings when using the larger coil? Any large coil tips appreciated.

After I installed the new coil I did a factory reset just in case the machine does some kind of self check to see what coil is installed. This is the first detector I ever had a second coil for so I have zero experience in this matter.

Thanks as always.

Chris

One more. Should I order a second stick and set of mounting hardware to make coil changing easier?

I wish I could be more helpful, but I only used my large imaging coil for a few minutes before deciding I had had enough of the weight and the awkward feel it gave to my machine. The ID was also questionable with the 2 coins I did find with it (dime and quarter).

I actually like the 12" NON-imaging coil better. Great depth. ID is dead on. Much lighter than the imaging coil.

You might also want to consider the 5x10 and the 4.5". ID is off with the 5x10, but it's a great competition hunting coil. 4.5 has very accurate ID and lets you get in really close to metal fences and playground equipment.

And, yes, I would suggest a lower rod for any coils that you plan to use with any frequency. It makes changing coils an absolute snap! Interestingly, in light of your original question, of the 5 coils I own for the 2500, the large imaging coil is the ONLY one I haven't bothered to buy a lower rod for.

Hope some of this is helpful.

Hello Chris,

The ID capabilities of the 12" coil should be not trusted accurate if the targets are on the fringe of
motion mode. Switch mode to zero disc and see if you get a good strong signal and ID. If you engage a target
in all metal that is on fringe in motion you can usually dig off an inch or two of ground to get an accurate ID (in the woods that means swiping the leaves away).
The draw back there is the amount of ground to move to get that big coil closer. This isn't too much problem
for me but it sounds like you are working park and diamonds where you must take care not to abuse.
Another thing to mention when dealing with deep targets is they tend to get on edge over time and this plays
further havoc on the ID capabilities.
Always carry a standard coil as back up with you as the large coil is much more suspect to electrical interference and
if you happen on a location with bad ground the detector must work harder to autotrack the balance on the
larger coil due to the surface area. In cases of bad the standard or ellip will give you much better end of day results
than fighting the 12 all day long.
I have settled for the 9 in any case where I am hunting in exploratory spots. If I suspect deeper objects in a clean
area that I have noted no interference and good ground I will later return to the spot with the larger coil.
