GTI 1500

Greetings all from Alabama, I just purchased a Garrett GTI 1500 last week. I have little metal detecting experience. I owned a White's 3000/D when I was like 12 years old. It's amazing how much technology has changed since then. This machine is a little more difficult to master than I initially realized. I'm spending time with it in my yard and in my prepared test bed. It seems to be a little off on some targets giving false id's. I guess I need to play with the sensitivity a little. I realize now that I will have to spend more time with it to learn this machine more. I'm sure I will be asking questions down the road. By the way, I'm new to this forum. David

Welcome to the forum David,,and back to the hobby by the sounds of it,,,It sounds like sens might be a bit high,,, I find that I have some places where I can use up to 8.5 on the sens but I have just been working an old yard that is rittled with nails and junk, and even with the sniper coil on I can only run the sens at 6,,,,not to sure if it helps anyone else but changeing the frequency seems to help a bit aswell

cheers Roger

Per the advise of the experienced folks
I run mine at 6 ....wroks fine

the GTI is much better at :detecting: thanI
am so far ....

The 1500 has a bit of a learning curve and doesn't operate like most other detectors. If you try to use it like you did other detectors you will fail. First of all run your sensitivity at 6 or 6.5. Scan slow as the 1500 has a lot of info to process. Centering the target for pinpointing is absolutely crucial with a GTI. You can't get sloppy or you will have problems. Keep the coil at least an inch off the ground. Watch the signal strength indicator when pinpointing and get it right on.

When you pinpoint a target back the coil clear off the target, press and hold pinpoint, then move back over the target and center it.The 1500 will often ID quarters as pennies unless you get the coil centered correctly and all other readings will be off. It's a very sensitive machine and needs to be treated accordingly. Once you figure it out it will reward you well.
