GTI 1500 VS AT PRO,, a rookie's assessment

dufus

New member
i got a new 1500 a few weeks ago, and i have used it 4-5 times. i just bought a used AT PRO from richard at ''backwoods detectors,'' that i believe used to belong member ''del'' on this forum. richard was first class to deal with, and del knows how to take care of his equiptment, as for all practical purposes it is spanking new. i went to a real trashy water park close to home, this morning. the AT PRO had me digging rusty bottle caps, ringing up as ''92-93'' and reading as a quarter. the GTI does not get fooled like this,, at all. besides,, the ''imaging'' will save digging useless holes, as it will read the size, and the icon under ''botletops'' will appear.. i also had a dime ring up, at 2'', reading ''86'' with the AT PRO,, that turned out to be 1 1/2''X2'' peice of a rusty old can. i also fooled with a hole with a lot of tree roots for about 30 minutes,, without finding anything,, that the PRO said was a dime at 2''-even after i had dug it out to 6 ''. i have decided that i am too old and decrepid to fool with the PRO too much more, as it is harder now for me to get up and down for false signals. i will stick with my 1500, as i had bought the PRO for my grandson anyway. i also have a new GOLD on pre order,,, now i'm leery of how that is going to work out. however,, i will be the first to admit that i am not very experienced with these new-fangled contraptions, and have tons to learn. the bottom line for me though,, the 1500 is easier to operate, and is [ for me ] a lots more accurate on ''hits''. the plus for the PRO,, it weighs a pound less than the 1500 i did manage to find 3 clad dimes, and 3 pennies, so i recovered some of the price for admission to the PRO. ------------ i also thought the signals were easier to understand in the ''pro'' mode, as opposed to the ''standard'' mode. it appeared to reject iron objects better, with a low tone. .

You are describing the behavior of a DD coil rather than the GTI 1500 vs At Pro. Put a concentric coil on the At Pro and you will see a difference. Also once you learn what the tones are telling you in the Pro Mode with Iron Audio, bottle caps will rarely fool you.

Yes I told you the 1500 is one of the best coin shooters IN THE WORLD!

and one other thing,, it definitely appears to me that coins are lots easier to pin point with the 1500. i have watched the garrett videos about pin pointing with the PRO, and tried both methods. however, i can center right on a coin with the 1500. the advice given to me about what a great coin machine the 1500 was spot-on, and i am glad i had enough smarts to listen to some of you guys. i'll probably be on here in a month or so, complaining about the GOLD........

If you're just a coinshooter, working in parks, get a 6 x 9 coil for that ATP and look out!! Those bottlecaps won't bother you anymore. Although they are real easy to figure out with the DD, it's hard to leave a high tone even though the Tone Roll Audio is telling you it's a bottlecap. I still use the DD on land hunts, but in the water I use my 6 x 9 rig so the BC's don't give you a good tone. I hunted a sandy freshwater beach this weekend that has been hunted to death by other brands (a lot by me) and got a bunch of DEEP coins and lures with the 6 x 9, a lot of them well over 8-10 inches. That 1500 won't do that, cuz I've got one and it just won't hit pennies and dimes that deep. Work with your ATP and it will reward you!!

I have only seen the 1500 in a demonstration from a guy in the park that wished he had an ATP.
I am not a fan boy type but the ATP out classes the 1500 in my experience.
Faster recovery speed and seperation, better depth, I could go on and on.

i thought about this situation yesterday afternoon, sitting on my deck drinking a few bud light limes, watching it rain. the probable bottom line is,, i am an old coot, and ''electronically challenged''. i tried to use a blackberry phone,, it was too much for me,, i had to go back to a ''dingleberry'',, i'm simply a ''hello and goodbye'' guy. i also am computer challenged, as i never fooled with them, period, until a few years ago. then i discovered,, it offends people worse to ask them to show you how to work a computer program, i would be better off asking if i could have sex with their wife........ although i established a successful business, i never did do the computer work,, i was ''in the trenches''. about 15 years ago i got a spiffy computer, had my lovely bride go to the community college, and hired her a tutor,, the gal caught right on. the problem with that now is she has developed pulmonary fibrosis [ hardening the lungs ] and is under hospice care and i positively will not bother her with this. however,,, my 19yo grandson is on top of all this stuff, and i did buy the PRO for him. he will figure that sucker out,, and then be able to coach me on the GOLD, when i get it. the 1500 is an improved model of what i was used to using, back when. sooo,,, it is just right for me................ it does a good job on coins,, and i am just piddling anyway a man can get into much worse tom-foolery than going to a park trying to find a few coins.....

If ya want some deep coins try the 12.5 imaging coil on the 1500. It does go deep even in disc mode. Remember the Minelab coin machines come with a 11 inch coil standard. And the AT Pro's 11x8.5 DD coil is equal, per its design of the blunted tip and tail, to a 12" concentric coil. So of course the 1500 wont be a depth monster with the smaller 9.5 coil. But with the big 12 imaging it does and also the 11x8.5 DD on it will get deeper than the stock but no imaging.

Best of luck,
Alan

p.s. try an iphone and a mac and your computer experince will be a pleasure instead of headache.

Heck 1500 is user friendly and your experienced with it...AT pro is the new kid on the block and your inexperienced with it..Once Garrett got the wrinkles out of the AT pro in time it will shine and the classifieds are filled with them as the user didn't take the time to learn it..And lets not forget the moderate price compared to the competition...
Look forward to your post when you get some more time in the field with Garretts newest AT pro...

i have gave the PRO to my grandson,, however,, after paying $679 for a GOLD,,, bet your boots i will get the hang of it. besides,, there will be a bunch of chatter and info from other users when they are in the field for a bit.

Yes it shows you are a rookie by this post. If you know the AT Pro it wll tell you 99.9 % time it is a bottle cap by its tone and sound and same VDI will come up every time for em.. Anybody that has owned his or hers AT Pro knows what i'm talking about. I dug em when it told me it was em, and the At Pro was real good at spotting em..That I learned to ignore em just by looking at VDI and sound. So before you bash a detector you might want to learn it first ROOKIE! IMHO :nopity:

i wasn't ''bashing'' it. reading is fundamental,, i CLEARLY stated that i was ''electronically challenged''. besides, i think i know what the problem is now,, the park has been overfilled with 4''-6''8'' of sand some time back. what appears to me to be the case, after my grandson and i went there yesterday, he was picking up DEEPER signals with the PRO, and when i scanned it with my 1500, it would not hit the signal. the DD 11'' coil was getting signals i could not pick up with the 9'' concentric on the1500. the place is super trashy, and i will try it next with a sniper coil that just came in from ''backwoods detectors''. -------------------whenever my GOLD comes in you can bet the farm i will learn to use it properly. learning how to use a detector is not exactly the same as plotting a re-entry path for the space shuttle............AND,,, this dumb look on my face, is just a disguise.

[size=large]WTG rookie. your looks are deceiving. you sound like you got a handle on what's what. Hope you and your gs have many good hunts together.

we both went to a city park in pearl,ms today. whenever he would hit on what appeared to be a ''good signal'', i would check it with the 1500 imaging feature. we both was watching real close what the VDI numbers were,, and listened closely to the sounds. that pro will sniff out a quarter in a heartbeat, and gives the ''dig it bubba'' signal. we are both on a learning curve, and this will help me with my GOLD. after that comes in, i will use it almost exclusively--- and LEARN how to!!!!!!!! he did dig up several cans, and vienna sausage tops, that the 1500 said ''EHHHHUUUUHH''. this is not any problem for a 19yo,, old farts like myself are a little more selective. i want to be rewarded for getting down on my knees to dig for something.....winter really won't be here until after christmas, and in a month or so, we will make a trip to biloxi [ 120 miles south of me ] and practice for a trip to gulf shores or pensacola to try some beach detecting.
