GTI 1500 pinpointing problems..

I picked up my GTI 1500 a couple of days ago and have now spent a few hours with it.
I know there's a learning curve and that I'll get to know it better after many more hours but I'm struggling with the pinpointing/imaging feature and am wondering if it's my technique or whether there may be a fault with the detector.
The manual says, after getting a repeatable signal, to place the search head on the ground away from the target area, press & hold the pinpoint button then move the head over the target area, looking for the strongest signal etc.
On the video, when doing this, the detector is nearly silent until it is over the target.
With mine, often it seems to go haywire on pressing the pinpoint button - sounding off loudly before I even move it. One way of getting round this seems to be to hold it around an inch above the ground, press the button then lower it to the ground & move over the target area. Sometimes this works, other times I just can't seem to get it silent enough to pinpoint.
I'm pretty sure it's not other metal objects in the surrounding soil causing the sounds.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Hello, I am a little new to the hobby so maybe an expert detector can help you out more. I have the 550 but I figure the pinpointing is basically the same. If you are on coin mode and are pinpointing a coin there may be a piece of trash next to it that it

Where do you have the sensitivity set? It should be at about 6 or 6.5. Your threshold should be just a slight hum or silent.
