GTI 12.5" Imaging Coil For 2500

I'm thinking about getting the 12.5" imaging coil for my GTI 2500. From what I've read it gives better performance in mineralized soil (not a problem for me) and helps detect larger targets at greater depth. My main interests are coins, jewelry, and smaller relics such as buttons and medallions.

My question is will this coil give me significantly greater depth on coins, jewelry and other smaller targets? My intuitive guess is that it probably should, but any input from those who are already using it will be greatly appreciated.

It does NOT do better in mineralized soil because it is so big and is NOT a DD. But in regular ground or using disc mode it will get around 3 inches + more depth.
If you want a big coil for bad ground I suggest the 10 x14 DD, but it doesnt Image. I love that big 12.5 coil, but it goes nuts if I use it to prosepect with in bad ground, which is all it is here.

I agree. The mineralization here in New Mexico, isn't all that bad. However, the 12.5 inch coil is a disaster! It causes the 2500 to lock up quite regularly, and the only way to get it working is to do a factory reset. To keep it from doing this, you have to back off the sensitivity to a point it doesn't go any deeper than the 9.5 inch. The fact Garrett offered to replace it with a DD coil speaks volumes!

Thanks for the input guys. I'd be happy with a couple more inches of depth, and as my soil is pretty neutral here in west KY there should be no problems with mineralization. I guess the online source that mentioned it was good in such conditions was back as$wards. Good thing we have the forums to share accurate information!

As it happens, I'm just now hooking up a purchase for the 12.5" from a community member here. A case of thought being father to the deed. I'll update on performance once it arrives and I put it through its paces. Thanks again and HH.

I'm checking out a county park with a lot of ground to cover, so thought I'd save some time and used the large coil on my 2500 for the first time today. It didn't work. All kinds of crazy things happened, especially locking up the machine or turning itself off. I had to do a factory reset several times just to get it back on. I finally gave up and switched back to the smaller coil. Is this a common problem with the large coil? Since this is the first time I used it, I haven't had a chance to contact Garrett. Are they offering any solutions?

I failed to mention in the above post that the ground here is not mineralized, and the stock coil works fine. Just thought the larger coil would help me cover more ground quicker. Any suggestions? Jugg

Yeah it ain't worth a damn in mineralized soil. You would need the 10x14 DD for that. But in normal soil it works great.

Thanks to all for all the great input. My 12.5" coil should be here in time for the weekend after this and I'll be sure to post an update on how it does. I'm also planning on doing a controlled depth test as well. HH.
