GTAX coils

Hi, just joined this forum. I wonder if anyone can tell me if any of the modern coils would work on an old Gtax 500.I used this machine for a number of years until I got a Whites DFX. The Garrett then became my back up machine. I found in areas with power lines the DFX was unusable so the 500 came back into its own. My son and grandson have now started detecting ,using the 500 and I`m thinking to uprate it if I can. Grateful for any advice.

It depends. If you have the "M" pin configuration on the coil connector, yes. If you have the "X" pin configuration, no. But you can make them work if you are handy with a soldering iron. I run 7 x 10 Proformance coils on my old GTAx 1000 PM and Freedom Ace Plus just by getting the old style plugs and connecting them to the newer coils. Some might say they operate at a different frrequency, but it is very negligible and doesn't really make any difference in the performance of the detector.

Hi, many thanks Big Cat Daddy.I checked detector coil connector and it is the "X" configuration so I think I will just leave it as it is. The detector works fine with the stock coil but I thought I might have got better perfomance if I uprated it.Once again many thanks for your advice, good luck and good hunting.

I just sent my GTAx 750 in for a little re-tune, only $40.00!! Also Garrett runs a special, you can send your old Crossfire coil in and for $72.00(40% discount) get the new elliptical coil that goes on the GTAx 550. It smokes the old Crossfire and you don't have to repair it. A great deal!!!! They run that discount no matter what coil you want!

Hi,

I have an old Garrett GTA 500. I haven't used it in about 10 years and I pulled it out the other day and am looking to upgrade the coil. I emailed Garrett and they told me this:

The coils that are compatible to your detector are the coils that work with the CX Plus. Here is a link to the coils that will work on your detector. http://garrett.com/hobby/hbby_masterhunter_searchcoils.htm All of these coils will work except the Treasure Hound Depth Multiplier. If you would like to get one of these coils, you can send in your old coil and we can give you 40% off the new coil with trade in of our old coil. Our if you want you can contact a local dealer and purchased the coil from them. Here is a link to find a local dealer. http://garrett.com/hobby/hbby_how_to_buy.asp

which lead me to buy this on eBay:

http://cgi.ebay.com/Garrett-14-x-10-Proformance-Coil-DD-for-GTI_W0QQitemZ320396576808QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_2?hash=item4a991fc828&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=65%3A13|66%3A2|39%3A1|293%3A1|294%3A50

For some reason I am still skeptical as to whether or not this will work. The price seemed right compared to the retail price. Now I know how it feels to be away from a technology so long and then come back to it and be lost.

Can anyone reassure me that this coil will work on my near 20 year old machine?

Thanks,

Steve

Well, get ready to put that coil back on E-bay. It's for the GTI and pinned WAY different than the GTA line. It's also a DD coil. Loves old rusty bottlecaps. Take Garrett up un their offer. And thanx for the valuable info. I wasn't aware the CX+ was pinned like the GTA series!!

Ouch. thanks Lonecatdaddy. So I guess it is safe to assume that Garrett makes that identical coil pinned for different detectors. I'll learn eventually. HH

Steve

Yep, the GTI's have 7 pin connectors instead of the 5 pin connectors on the GTA/GTAx series. The GTA's have an "X" pin configuration and the GTAx's have an "M" pin configuration as do the Ace 150/250 machines.

Do you think I will be better off buying an Ace 250 package with multiple coils for around $250, rather than spending any more on trying to upgrade the GTA 500? Thanks for the continued input.
