I am Looking into a deal with someone for a GTAx 750. asking 350 with a gtax 10"x14" coil thrown in for 400. What should I expect? and can you guys fill me in. I cant seem to find any reviews on this machine. HELP ME before I buy

I've never owned one, but from what I understand it's a good machine.
Here are some helpful links:

Field test report from Lost Treasure Magazine online
http://www.losttreasure.com/content/archives/garrett-electronics-gtax-750

3 reviews(you need to take out the spaces for link to work)
http://metal detector reviews.net/detectors/108-1-garrett gtax750.html

Owners Manual
http://www.garrett.com/hobby/manuals2/GTAx-750.pdf

I think they came out in 1999 and they stopped making them in 2003(last year they were made).
$400 seems alittle steep to me but not outragious. I mean, you can get a brand new GTAx550 with warranty and free UPS shipping for that.
Best of luck to ya!:biggrin:Happy Hunting!:)

What is the difference between the ace 250 and GTAx550?? Is the 550 still a better detector? I remember that I had an ace when they just came out and a guy was pushing me to trade his 1250 with my ace.

My huntingbuddy had one and made good finds with it. Using an explorer for years now but still says that the garrett gave him more fun times while detecting.

Good luck.

Eric

The 750 is a decent machine but has been out of production for a good many years and the MSRP was $599.95 when new and the discount prices were a hundred or so less than that so the price you are being quoted is a little high for a detector ten years old or more. You'd be as well off to take less money and pick up a 250 with later technology.

Bill.

I have a field test on the 550 over at losttreasure.com It's a good machine but it won't do anything a 250 won't do.

I will generally say that about all Garrett detectors. One of Charles Garrett's design philosophies is "high tech without high tech stress."
Mind you, there is a lot of tech-stuff going on with them. But for the user, most of it is behind the scenes and not intended to impress or overwhelm. I know guys that use the Excals and F-75's and constantly talk about all the high tech features they have. And while they are good instruments, what is left out of the discussion is that they are control hogs - the user is constantly fiddling with and evaluating what is going on with them.

Not so the Garretts. The information they offer is useful, but presented in simple graphic form. A lot of people coming from other detectors have problems with that, as they seem almost toy-like when compared to some other models. The GTA 750 would fit that niche, although Uncle Willy is right - the price for the one here is too high. Check on ebay for what people actually pay for them and don't take the current owners word on it. Or use my favorite practice and employ the Fibonacci Constant.

Simply multiply his asking price by .618 and make that your offer.

Hello Fellow Seekers,

I came to the Garrett forum today to look for a used Garrett Ace 250 - 9" x 12" concentric coil and couldn't help but notice the postings on the Garrett 750, which is no longer made. The Garrett 550 is presently made but will likely be dropped within the near future (per my Garrett dealer here in Western Michigan). I was interested in purchasing a 'Back-Up' detector and he clearly stated the Garrett Ace 250 is superior in every way to the Garrett 550. It has more features, sells for hundreds less dollars, and is nearly a pound lighter! Going from what my dealer told me, you'd be far better off if you bought the Deluxe Garrett Ace 250 Pack, which comes with two coils, a case, and other extra's right now. It's more money but why buy used when you can get 'New' for less???
