GT Price Increase

I know this is old news, and maybe this has been covered already, I don't know since I haven't been on here in a while. But here is my view with regard to the GT price increase. The new price of $995 is only for advertising purposes, Minelab is not allowed to tell dealers what they can actually sell the GT for. The actual price to the dealers is the same as it was. The new MSAP is Minimum SUGGESTED Advertised Price. So the dealers have to advertise it at that price, but can still sell it at the old price, or any price they want.

did minelab tell you this, did you buy a GT much lower than the advertised price, or is this a guess? I was under the impression all the dealers had guidelines they must adhere to for selling new detectors. not just minelab dealers but all the others as well. at least it looks that way in the advertising on their websites.

Dealer cost also went up on the GT and is actually higher than the Minelab Safari now with the new price increase on cost and MAP. The $999 is the lowest the dealer can advertise for without a trade in and can allow a trade in of what ever he feels is fair or ad a few accessories.

Not unless you find a website that didn't update their pricing and get it for $798.00 :) I know I was very lucky to find a website that didn't update their pricing and they honored it. But from what I see, every site out there charges right around $998.00 U.S. Dollars for the Minelab GT.

Im here to tell you that the dealers will sell them a lot cheaper. I bought a new GT after the price increase for 699.00 new in the box, not a refurb. New stock from a well respected dealer that we all know and love to deal with and his name is on this forum everyday. I wont give his name out for obvious reasons. And I love it and cant wait to learn it even better. Thanks for listening. Jack

Yes, it's true that the price to dealers went up. But not as much as the MSAP increase. Here is an email from Minelab explaining how the process works, this is regarding the price increase on Explorer 2 several years ago, which many companied about and Minelab lowered again:
-------------------
Your email concerning the Explorer II has been forwarded to my attention.

With all due respect, your comments are incorrect. As a manufacturer, Minelab has not, can not and will not dictate retail prices to our dealers. What we can do is SUGGEST a minimum advertised price in order to preserve the high-end value proposition of our products. Once purchased from us, a dealer is free to sell Minelab products for whatever price he or she believes is appropriate.

In reality, we have increased our prices to dealers only marginally, in part to cover our increased costs for transportation, parts and other overhead items.

We raised the minimum advertised price in response from requests by our dealers primarily due to items being advertised on the internet. The actual price increase for this particular model was literally pennies.

I hope this answers your concerns. You are welcome to contact me directly if you have additional questions or concerns.

Thank you for your support of our products.

There you go folks, the dealers can sell them at whatever price they can still make a profit, and it's a tough business out there lots of small business costs to cover so I am sure they all welcomed the MSAP increase, but maybe not because not as many people are going to call them asking to buy a GT since it's "out of their price range" even so if they bargained a little they could have got a better deal!

Just to set the record straight when the GT MAP priced increased the $200 the dealers cost also raised $130 which gave the dealer a little more to allow for trade ins or ad a few extra.
As far as the prices a Minelab dealer advertising a price lower than the MAP price there is a contract they sign that they can not advertise lower than MAP prices or they will void the contract and not be able to be Minelab authorized dealer. I feel the reason for this is so they can keep some good quality dealers that are willing to service their customers with good service and advice. Now if they didn't there would be price wars and discounts by those that only care to make the sale and don't care about the service, they could sell out of their bedroom and sell cheaper, but when you need advice or service they could care less as they have your money already.
Now what kinds of deal they can make is up to the dealer and not Minelab, but they can not advertise lower than the MAP prices. This is also true with many of the other Detector company's too that you can not advertise lower then the MAP price as they too want good quality dealers and not those that only want the $$$ and don't care after the sale.
Minelab cant tell you what to sell for, but can tell you the lowest you can advertise for if you want to stay a authorized Minelab dealer.

Also true with many other companies.......Leatherman, Buck, Estwing etc. etc.

All good points Rick. Didn't realize that Minelab raised the price by $130 to dealers, that much more then I thought. Thanks for the input.

I might add, unfortunately the price increase must not have affected the price of used GTs that much. I base this on my experience. I have had my less-than-a-year old GT advertised for 3 months at $650, $350 below advertised new price and people are STILL wanting it for less. CRAZY world.

Could it be that they want it for free? Or is it the bottom line that they are cheap.
