GT overload shut down question...

Buried Crap NJ

I was hunting last night and the GT hit on a iron piece and nulled and squeaked and just, I think shut off? I ran it across my scope and nothing but silence. I thought oh dead battery but I shut it off and back on and the next 3 hrs when uneventful. Should I be concerned?

When you shut it off and turned it back on did you have any threshold ? Or all that you are experiencing is complete silence for 3 hours? Also you are stating if you put a coin down on the ground it doesn't sound off? Just thinking of some ideas here......Also do you use headphones? Maybe your headphones died. Try without headphones, if no audio maybe something technical went wrong with the speaker. If speaker to GT works, obviously we realize it was your headphones. Was your battery fully charged? How old is the battery? Using the akaline pak or rechargeable? maybe you need a new battery? hmmmm loose cable connection(s)? Did you recently drop your detector or hit it or the coil on rock or tree while detecting? Not sure what else to tell you. Hope nothing serious is wrong with it. Keep me posted.

I should have put more info, Unit is about 8 months old has about 10 cycles on it. Gray ghost headset. It seemed to shut down no sound at any metal after a null. I turned it off and on again and hunted like I just started on the beach. worked as normally does. Found 70 targets after the episode. Just locked up for some reason. Ya none of those dropped things. Battery worked for 3 more hrs after I restarted it, so battery wasn't dead.

I would try to repeat it at home. Scan a can or a car. See if it happens again. This is a new one for me. If you can overload it and it still works I wouldn't worry. But I would find out at home instead of on the hunt.

hmmm that is strange. Sounds like overload protection and you had to turn on/ off to reset. Never ran into that (and do not want to) Glad your machine is ok.

did you turn off the volume on your headphones when it overloaded somtimes i have done that going along with my headphones axidentaly shut off . its probly something simple

I wished it was that simple. It happened so fast I was digging coins like someone threw them in front of me. The thing chipped nulled and nothing I just turned it off and on and kept going. Then I thought hey that's not right the battery was low but it gave me 3 hrs and did not fail again. i'll keep an eye on it. Thanks

I had a problem with my 6 month old GT where the Threshold disappeared after 20 minutes of use, in the end I phoned Minelab and it had to be sent in for repairs, the problem was found to be the PCB board.

You say it nulled and "squeaked" - was it a squeak or a clicking sound, the sort of sound where you are switching something off.....?

Mine will occasionally null and click, when on a mass of iron rubbish - the machine sounds although its switched itself off, clicking sound then no threshold....... but moving a few strides away and giving it a few seconds and the threshold returns.

I also had another issue...... I thought it was a loose wire because the machine would go dead and then it would just suddenly come back again a few minutes later. But eventually I realised that my headphones have a screw connector between the wire and the plug and this had come loose.... With the headphones you are using that should not be an issue - but for anyone in the UK who uses the headphones that come supplied then it is something to be aware of.

Maybe it was still in Null from the overload when you switched it off and you didn't give it time to recoup.

Maybe the circumstances were just right to lock up the computer on the circuit board? Something rare that only happens one in a million times and turning it off and back on will reset. That's my theory.

Critterhunter might just hit the nail on the head. I spoke with Ewout Kozel Minelab and stated the same thing. If the machine is overloaded to a certain point it can automatically shut down! Oh no there was my once in a life time bar of gold and I walked away from it! I gave it a a good amount of time to recover before going to Off/On and moved away from the null. So I am quite sure it shut off.
