Gt meter question

I got a used meter for the Sov - GT but no manual. Minelabs web site has a brief description on the meter . Hook up to detector and calibrate to zero and swipe a US quarter and calibrate to 170.

the meter reads in the 300's and is very erratic jumping all over and giving all types of reading's

calibrate in what mode? Disc - All metal ?

what's the trick to getting this meter working

TIA

I think you have a older meter, not a GT meter as they are new and are 180 meter. Now some of the older ones were 550 meter and will work on the GT I understand. Now the calibration is done in the disc mode as this is the only mode that does the tone and meter ID. In all metal it is just a signal strength meter.
To calibrate either meter, the 180 or the 550 I would set the sensitivity to auto and try to swing the quarter or dime just back and forth and try to keep as high and as steady reading as possible. To do this you have to swing only over the target and try to keep the tone as high as you can. With this you will adjust the 550 meter to 550 without going over more than a number or 2. On the 180 meter which Minelab calls the 170 we all use the 180 numbers as it is what we have been used to with the Sun Ray and re calibrated Minelab meters we will run the quarter or dime until we can adjust it for 179-180 reading.
If you go too far one way OR the other you may see the number jump a bit and why we try to keep that tone as smooth as possible by swinging only over the target trying to keep it as steady as possible.

You have the Elete meter which came set up as a 550 meter.
I got one for my GT and had to make an internal adjustment, as it would not cal to 550.It stopped at about 450.

Try this...
Switch to all metal. Turn the sensitivity ALL THE WAY DOWN. Turn it on. DO NOT wave it over a coin. DO NOT get any metal close to the coil.
See if the meter will adjust to either 124 or 384. If it adjusts to 124 then it is modded to 180. If it adjusts to 384 then it's a stock 550 meter.
If it will not adjust to either, then it needs an internal adjustment.
If it adjusts to 124, then switch to disc mode and wave a quarter over the coil. the meter should read about 180.
If it adjusts to 384, then switch to disc mode and wave the quarter. Should read about 550.
If it adjusts in all metal from startup closer to 124 than 384 then it was probably modded to 180.
if it adjusts in all metal from startup closer to 384 then it is probably a stock 550.

Follow these instructions to the letter and tell us what you get.

This meter is for a Elite and not for a GT

or it can be used by both

could this meter be sent out to be 180 mod if so who does this.

Thanks to all

You can use any meter on any Sov. The one you have came out when the Elite came out.
Wildherre used to mod them to 180. Don't know who else.
You have still not given us enough information to tell if the meter is modded or not, or is working right.
