John,I don't relic hunt often,but the Sovereign for park hunting is one of the best.This detector will find a lot of left overs in worked out parks,both jewelry and coins.First time users usually hate this detector those who learn the Sovereign will always keep one around.Good Luck Ron

John i haven't beach hunted yet but i have pulled out 3 indian head cents in my area with my Sov's and i have been over the same area w/a lot of detectors. I think after hunting a spot with what ever detector , go back with a Sov. and clean up what ever was missed IMO. This is from what i see. But i have not been doing this hobby for long.I can only go by what i have done. HH GS

i dont park hunt with mine mainly cause i dont like using a meter and digging really deep holes in the park can become an issue not to mention pinpointing isnt necessarily spot on..... however,for farm field hunting,beach, woods etc it can be and is an awesome machine in my opinion....its my go to machine for old colonial house sites....hits large cents a foot deep with little trouble-conditions permitting......nice variety of coils are available too to make it more versatile..... i like using mine anywhere where digging large deep holes is not an issue because sooner or later you will be digging deep to retrieve targets...... i have no problem working old nail infested home sites .....once you know what the iron sounds like you can ignore it...but the aluminum and can slaw drives me crazy so i opt for older sites that had there heyday before aluminum was widely used.... around cellar holes it should work very well also.....
Any of the Sovereigns are great and the GT is more sensitive than the others. I coin hunt mostly and a little relic too in old parks, schools, ball fields and even some churches and in my 40 year of detecting I feel the GT is one of the best I have ever seen for all around hunting. Like Ron says is most hate this detector when they first get it as it is different and it gives you a lot of info with the tones and lets you the user decide what to dig and what not too. I like a 180 meter and my Sun Ray S-1 probe as this makes the GT even better with some digital number to help you understand the tones you hear, the S-1 probe makes recovery faster and you don't have to dig as big of a plug to find the target.
I myself highly recommend the Sovereigns with the GT the best of the lot.

I agree the Sovereign with a S-1 probe is in a category by it self for accurate pin pointing.No other setup is easier on a manicured lawn. HH Ron

I have used the Sovereign it places that have been hit hard with other detectors by me and others and still mangaged to find nice old coins long after the site was written off as hunted out.
Surprisingly, many of the coins were not that deep, but were very close to nails and other pieces of iron.. the Sovereign even with the 10" coil can detect those coins very well in iron infested sites.. at least it has for me.
I am very impressed by the Sovereigns performance in heavily hunted sites that are open to the public such as you mentioned.
I usually use mine at a certain park during the fall and winter when the grass is down and there are not many folks present to complain about metal detecting.

I have to chime in. John, I think we are members of the same metal detecting
group in MA/NH. I have said it for years and also have a few testimonials
on Minelab's website including find of the month for March 2013.
The Sovereign GT is the most versitile detector one can own. It excels on the land in the
water and the beaches.

I recently purchased a GT for several reasons, first I like old knobs and switches, second it's supposed to be the best beach hunter ever made, and lastly they're no longer being made. I haven't been able to use on a beach yet, but in learning machine on land in parks and wading in freshwater lakes, I've come to realize I LOVE this machine. It really shines in trashy areas which is just the opposite of what I would have expected. Pinpointing is a little different from my Tesoro's, but I have to admit I'm reaching for GT more over my Tejon'.

I purchased my Gt in July 2012. My First detector. For the first month or two I was extremely frustrated with the machine as I could not understand what it was telling me. My hearing loss is in the Profound area in the upper frequencies which certainly did not help my understanding of the tones. I purchased one of Ron From Michigan's 180 meters and in no time I was finding that I really did like the machine. Now I Don't Leave Home Without It. Just in case I get the opportunity to spend a few minutes detecting a new area.
I use it at the Ocean Beach, parks, playgrounds, Lawns and anywhere else that I can get permission to detect. I have a variety of coils that I have purchased for the detector and use different ones based on how trashy an area might be etc. I do have a Garrett ACE-250 that I purchased as a backup/grandkids machine. I have used it a few times on totlots so that I could get closer to all the metal equipment. Otherwise the Sovereign is my machine for detecting. I would not mind having a submersible machine but cant justify the expense at the present time.
