GT as a nugget shooter?

jlw

New member
Not sure if this question has been asked on the forum before but would like to know from those that have used it for nugget hunting?

Yes it's something i have wanted to know as well, I have the Soverign GT also but go golding with the GPX4500 & in the excitement of finding the yellow stuff i forget to get my Soverign out & try it. Will follow this question with interest !
Cheers

Yes the question have been circulated before.
Yes the GT can be used for nugget hunting.
I personally find it a little to insensitive to small nuggets and the ground balancing ability a tat limited, at least in our ground.
But the GT can definitely detect gold.

Great ! You mean i have bought this expensive GPX4500 thingy for no reason as my old faithful Soverign GT will find the yellow stuff as well. Am heading to the Gold Fields over here ( Australia ) in around a months time, So this time when i find a patch i will go get the Soverign GT & give it a whirl , I will go back over the same ground again with the 4500 just to make doubly sure though.
Cheers

There is a discussion on this in either the main or MXT Whites forums. I don't know much about prospecting but from the looks of it those guys say the MXT is a much better nugget shooter than the Sovereign. Might consider one of those. It would for sure be much lighter.

Surely the MXT would get the smaller nuggets. My question is would the GT get the larger [and what would be the minimum size?] nuggets deeper than the MXT with equivalent coil size and in bad ground?? James

That's a good question. I would guess that the GT would see bigger nuggets deeper than the MXT, even if the ground was highly mineralized or not. Question would be how big does the nugget have to be before that happens.

Unless there are some rippers lucking in your hunting area, your GT will be a disappointment on small gold.

Try this;

Take a small gold nugget with the GT and air test it in front of the coil.
You'll see that small nuggets are sometimes found, but most times not.
The smaller the nugget, the more likely the GT will not even see it.
Add in the highly mineralized ground and subtract sensitivity / depth ( your GB will be hotter in these areas), notch out or desc iron, add in some massive amounts of chatter and there you have it. The odds are stacked massively against finding small gold targets.
You can find nuggets with a GT if you are lucky but it will not be as effective as a GP or GPX.
Not even close. Apples and Oranges.
Even an off the shelf PI unit will have more sensitivity and depth over a GT with respect to small grain nuggets. All VLF units and BBS units like ML's GT will not see a gold wrist chain even if you bunch / ball it up and air test it. The clasp is the only thing that these detectors will see. Depending on the clasps limited surface area, it will only sound off it its close to the coil, at about 1.5 - 2.5 inches if you are lucky.
When you add in the ground and its effects, it
