gt all metal sensitivity question

tater peeler

New member
i run in all metal at the beach w/sens at max, grnd bal in track for a couple minutes than i switch to fix, when i get a signal i switch to disc iron mask on,disc and notch at zero if still a good single i dig, if a null, i double check w/a tight wiggle over the target,(have found a few real deep targets w/just a short tone when doing this) i have dug some nulls just to check and has always been iron so far. my question is when the gt balances (compensates for the mineralized sand /salt water)w/sens at max am i missing gold targets, like the threshold tone is the same as the tone gold would give off,,i am finding pull tabs waaaay deeper than i want to dig and im finding nickles,,as well as silver,,platinum and all other metals ,just feel like i may be missing some gold,,sometimes i get a faint signal in all metal than when i switch to disc the signal is loud and clear most of the time thats on foot deep dimes,, thanks for any insight

Sounds like your doing things right. I just like running the Sovereigns in the Disc Mode as the target response is a bit more defined. Get yourself a Steam Shovel Sand Scoop and make retrieval easier.

I find I too run in the disc mode with the Sovereign as I feel I get better depth and better responds on targets. The all metal on the new GT I hear works better for those that prospect. There is a few that will run all metal and may be able to swing the coil faster, but I feel for those that go slower the disc will work better and once you know those tones you will be able to pick out the good from the bad by the tones it give. Gold rings seem to give off a smoother tone that that of a pull tab.

I hate to be blunt, but it sounds like you have no idea what the tones in all metal are telling you.

The all metal tones have NOTHING to do with the tones in discriminate.
In disc mode, the tones and lingering threshold give you a target ID.
In all metal, the threshold defaults to the standard tone for startup in either mode -- disc OR all metal. This is a MID RANGE tone.

In all metal, when the detector is ground balanced, objects that are conductive as a zinc penny or higher will shift the tone upward in frequency. The stronger the signal is, the higher and louder this tone will get.
When the target is lower conductivity than a zinc, the tone will shift downward. The stronger the hit is, the LOWER and LOUDER the tone will be.

This is like VCO operation with my Whites to a great extent ..... the stronger the hit, the more shift and the louder it gets, with one exception........
My Whites only shifts UPWARD in pitch and volume for all targets.
The GT will run either direction based on the target's conductivity.

So for gold ( lower than a zinc in conductivity unless it's really huge) will give you a downward shift in tone. The lower it gets and the louder it gets, the stronger the hit is.

Understand??

It looked like nobody really addressed the problem at hand.

Like Rick, I don't use all metal because disc works just as good or better for me. With properly set sensitivity and sweep speed, it could go either way at YOUR hunting location.

I am not going to fool around wearing out my mode switch to check targets in trashy areas. Unless there is a great difference in performance between disc and all metal, then I don't see any reason to fool with all metal at all... unless for pinpointing or attempting to verify if a target is iron or not.

at the first civil war relic competion hunt i went to i was told to use the sovereign in all-metal nad then check in disc. i found out quickly that all i was doing was checking a lot of iron signals that in disc. would be eliminated any way.

u basically answered my question,,the threshold in all metal mode is a default tone,,no matter what type soil or sand i am detecting in,, the tone will be the same pitch,,the old whites that i have has a manual ground balance button on the handle the threshold tone Was different when i moved from wet sand/dry sand and black sand and reset the balance,,sometimes i would get a louder threshold tone when going over a target,,no change in the tone just louder,,which on deep targets in all/metal with the gt i sometimes only get a louder sound,,,no change in tone,,and not to start a pissy but i have read about everything u guys have posted about tones and all including clive's and if in disc/iron mask on, disc and notch at zero, the gt is discriminating out ferrous objects only (low conductivity) low tone, than why do u sometimes get a tone with a higher pitch than the threshold after the null

On a singular iron target, sometimes as the coil is leaving it, you will get a high pitch. Things like old fence wire or nails can do this.

There can also be a non-ferrous object just past the iron which will get picked up.

Hot rocks and large coal cinders can give you a higher pitch just after the null. Somtimes you get a cut off high tone, a null, then a high tone. Even saw a cheap tennis bracelet do this.

When the hot rocks and iron are acting up too much, turning OFF the iron mask will usually knock them out. While this will make it a bit more difficult to pick up good objects next to iron , at least you won't have to listen to the iron and rocks so much.

The GT seems particularly prone to hot rock/iron trouble than previous versions that had iron mask turned on all the time.

A Sov (of any version) will not do away with ALL the iron.

Like my Whites (in all metal VCO on/off) the GT can also vary in loudness in the default tone without changing pitch. I think this has to do with a change in the soil conductivity, as it is over a wider area of the sweep than an actual target would be. It is the short distinct bump to watch for.
