Hi, new to the forum, but have been researching archives for a long time. I'm going to purchase a use Minelab Sovereign GT Metal Detector. I have found most of the things to check when making a purchase thanks to you guys. But the one thing I'm having trouble finding is out to determine the age, serial number model ???? Any help would be appreciated. This places is fantastic information is readily available and . It doesn't seem to have little groups of people trying to out do each other.
very enjoyable and I hope get more involved as a venture out the world of discovery.
Thanks for your time

Well I think I've answered my own question, inside the sovereign GT battery box there is a sticker. Warranty void if removed with a barcode 30120068E315885 I think the 2006 represents the year of manufacture. Can anybody verify and confer. Possibly decode the rest of the numbers, on thinking the information for where manufactured and the month.

old Elite and it has the 2006 in that number also...unless they came out with the GT in 06 and i got the last of the 06 Elite's? 30120068e 10147

I guess have to keep investigating ill try to give minelab a call after the holiday. Thanks for the info.

This is off original subject I posted is that a paper clip on the shielding foil upper left-hand corner. The reason I ask is I opened my unit up to clean because there was a lot of sand and corrosion. When I saw the paper clip in mind I thought there was no way that could be from the factory. And had thought someone had made a home repair. The foil was cut open so someone was in their. Probably for the same reason I was. Appreciated any explanation.

I don't have an explanation for the paper clip... but from what I've read on the forums over the years I believe the paper clip is a "factory supplied" part!

Yes because I have found the paper clip too, I think it is a body with power cable :beers:

This is factory done as it is the ground for the grounding sheild (alum foil around the controls). This has been used since back in the middle 90s.

The paper clip is factory. Other brands use them to. I had a fisher 1265 that had one. If the wire going to it breaks going to it, you will get background noise in silent search. Been there done that. The shield is important.

Hi,guys the mystery of the age continues. I spoke to a minelab manager a little while ago. To make arrangements for my GT to be service. I asked how to determine the age, apparently it is by serial number I inquired about the code, and was told that technician could determine the age and for me to place a note in with the machine and he would probably let me know. Further questioning did not help reveal secret code IT will remain protected. Once the unit is in their possession and I'm contacted by them will press for further information. The only problem is the threshold seems to be erratic . There may be nothing wrong but it can't hurt to have checked out. It was supposed to have only 15-20 hrs. I open the machine of because there was a lot of sand coming out. The ground shields was rip apart so apparently someone was in there before hopefully only to clean, I'll keep you posted .hope everyone had a safe and enjoyable 4th.

hi,i got a call from Minelab apparently they want me to send my unit to Illinois not Vegas, so I asked about the year again. She made several calls , search computer records, and then called back about 15 minutes later and she can not find any way of determining the age of an individual unit, only the date that they started production of a particular model. So the information I received earlier this morning may be invalid. So the mystery goes on!

The age doesn't really matter much. If it's a GT then you know it has to be fairly new, no older than when that model came out. I've never heard certain GT models were better than others or anything as far as production goes. Same with older Sovereigns, except that some old XS (?) models came with no sheilding for a production run. The paperclip IS a factory item. Reason for it is that that shielding isn't easy to keep a solder connection to stick to. The paperclip holds to it and makes good contact. Reason for it in the first place is it's a ground wire for the shielding. Without it the unit would be more prone to picking up noise. The shield comes apart right in the middle via some double sided tape to gain access to the board. It isn't meant to be a solid piece otherwise you wouldn't be able to take it apart to get to things, but make sure you seal it back together when done.

The "VOID IF REMOVED" sticked under the battery holder fooled me when I first took apart my GT. I thought there was a hidden screw under there that I had to remove to get the unit apart so I could install my remote pinpoint switch's jack. Pealed the sucker off and then realized I was taken! Now there was no turning back while staying under warranty. If I got in there and decided not to do the PP mod the warranty was going to still be void. Luckily I managed to design a mod for a PP for it with no problems ran into, so it was worth voiding the warranty. Not that I endorse it, but if you want to peak around inside your box without anybody knowing you have then don't peal off that sticker! You don't have to.

Hi, CritterHunter ,appreciate all the info. I will be contacting you when i start to do some modifications pinpointing will be first. My main concern with the age of the unit . When they made the purchase I was told the unit was three years old and had light use, 15 hours or so. After a more thorough examination I believe that much more than that. The coil cover was siliconed on and when removed. The coil showed a lot of wear and big chips. At the base of the switches there was a lot of corrosion. In the switches didn't exactly snapped into place more of a Moorish, the knobs function but to me seem to move very freely. When I opened the unit of it was full of sand. In the circuit boards had clean corrosion not real bad but noticeable. Clean it up with contacting and everything seems to be function, just not as pristine as I was led to believe. Don't get me wrong an not unhappy with the unit I spoke to the seller he was doing a friend a favor selling it for him and was more than willing to take the unit back he called the first owner and advising to send back some compensation for not disclosing condition I had asked if it had ever been seviced or opened and was told no. I'm going to send it into get service to see if there are any serious issues. I like to find someone in my area (cooper city ,hollywood Fl.) That uses this machine so they can try it out and tell me if there is in fact anything wrong with that should be addressed thanks again for your input.

I'd definitly send it in to be serviced. Then, if it comes back with a clean bill of health, I'd try to get the seller to AT LEAST compensate you for the service work performed. They didn't do you right and should not get away with it. JMHO
