GS5, how similar to the TDI?

Hi guys,

I had a GS5, and like an idiot, I sold it, have been offered a TDI, but was wondering how much tinkering Whites did with Eric's design?

I have heard that the power output is far lower on the TDI, can anyone confirm what the differences are please?

Cheers

Darrin

Don't believe all you hear. Power output is the same.

No tinkering as such, but after the first 200, the boards were made using surface mount components, which means one board instead of two. Target conductivity switch added to increase the versatility, and LED battery condition lights. The coils are nicer looking on the TDI and perform well, Dual field coil introduced with TDI as well.

Eric.

Thanks Eric,

Was therre a serial number point when the boards changed ( i guess around number 200;)) ?

JUSt would like to know it there is a quick way for the seller to find out which version he has.

Cheers

I don't have a TDI but i do have a Goldscan 5C, and from looking at pictures of the TDI it seems as though the Whites TDI does not have the controls that are available on the top of the GS5C: 10 turn GB, Volume, Tone, Invert Audio Switch.

There will be 2 new versions of the TDI that will be released soon. One is a simplified version that will be $100 cheaper. But one will have more controls like the GS5C (2nd Ground Balance + Volume Control + ???) and cost $100 more. It is rumored that this one may be more sensitive. I read about this on the TDI tech forum.

Hi Darrin,

The first 200 TDI boards have fewer words above the Conductivity switch. The newer boards have the words something like GEB on Required. The original 200 boards only have Conductivity High, All, or Low.

The first 200 boards use through the hole parts, while the newer boards use some surface mount components.

The pic on the Whites website is one of the original 200 units. Here is a link.

BTW, I prefer the original units because they are easier for me to work on. I am not that excited about changing a surface mount part.

As for performance, I doubt anyone could tell the difference if there is any.

As for the differences between the GS 5 and the TDI, that is more of one of hand crafted versus production models. Also, the GS 5 does have a couple of extra controls not found on the TDI.

Thanks for that Reg,
I know what you mean about surface mount, modded a few ham radios, and they are a pain in the neck, I've filed down my iron tip to a pinpoint..

I've got a GT with the 15" WOT coil to add, I used that alongside the GS5 before, and I know the GS5 would wipe the floor with the GT on our 5 pence piece for instance, just want to make sure the TDI will do the same before I fork out my cash.....

Cheers
