I went to the bank yesterday to cash a check. As I put the check down and showed them my ID, she asked if I was a member. I said no. She said it will cost you $7 to cash this today. I said no it won't and picked up my check. I also told her that I had cashed checks there many times and was never charged a fee. She said we started that in June. I told her that I had cashed checks in there during the summer, and was not charged. Now this check was made out from their bank. All they had to do is check the account to see if the money was there. In my case they wanted 5% of the check! I don't know about you but If I write a check to someone, I wan't them to receive the cash even if it is from my bank. I know of one other bank that has been doing this for a while, and I had heard that it was owned by Japan? These two banks are Fifth Third, and National City
I won't be going to them any more!

Most of our military, because of temp. assignments, do not open bank accounts where they are located. Many banks charge them to cash their checks from the gov. There should be a law against charging to cash a federal check at a federal reserve bank. I experienced this many times, when I could least afford the charge.

Everyone knows 5 thirds is One and two thirds. Actually 5 thirds is the amount they want you to pay them and 3/5 is what they want to give you for that check.

I saw a bumber sticker once that said "Four out of three people don't know their fractions" - guess they are all FifthThird bank customers

You might want to check with the Better Business Bureau. I believe that if a check is drawn on a particular bank, they have to honor it without charge whether you're a member or not! I get checks from many different banks and have cashed them at the respective branches with only one case where they would not honor it. I complained to their central office and was told the problem was with new employees (yeah right).

What gets me is that banks can hold a deposit for 72 hours before crediting it to an account. I had a bank do that to me twice and caused me to bounce a couple of checks written on the deposits. One was a FHA mortgage check and I needed it for another closing. Needless to say, I don't bank with them anymore. If more people realized how banks can legally steal their money, there would be more stuffed mattresses.

Hope you get it worked out!

Have a Blessed Christmas!

nowadays. I always deal with my credit union - never any problems. If I get a check from a bank I am not a member of I just put it in my credit union acct and no problems, Steve in so az

it is becoming more common, but that don't mean I have to like it! I will just do my business elsewhere!

and when she took it there she only got $295 - they took out $5 because we don't have an account there - like you the check is drawn on an account there. I think it is time to start stuffing mattresses and let the banks go broke.
