Hello all, I'm pretty new to the joys of detecting I had an explorer SE for just over a year and found some pretty good stuff so decided to treat myself to an E-Trac to see what she could turn over.
What puzzles me is what is classed as high mineralisation ? The reason i ask is because there is a field that i often go in, its stiff wet clay with small limestone chippings, the actual limestone bed is probably about 500mm below ground level, in this field i only seem to be able to detect stuff either sitting on the surface or no deeper than 2-3 inches. Its frustrating as I know there used to be a Saxon settlement and church there many moons ago so there is bound to be some goodies.Help please
A# rule of thumb "Bigger the coil , more pronounced the ground effect" I do not care if it is DD or whatever even though DD has less exposed area than a concentric.......A large DD is making the processor crunch more bad ground that a smaller coil.....so with all that being said and the rest that is unsaid ......look for the coil that is best of both worlds for bad ground .....and you may have to experiment with a few before you find the perfect combo...
B# control sensitivity find the sweet spot for each coil at each site for the ground you hunt.......Do not be afraid to play with different settings ......Lesson ONO i was at a trashy water site I had modified my detector to have a water proof assessable sensitivity control .....where I could change it on the fly with out opening the water proof housing.......Well Neat thing was I wired it backwards with the control all the way up it was all the way down instead of CW (clock wise) +gain it was CCW so I thought it was turned up when it really turned most the way down ............I found some of my best gold that day in the site I have been detecting over 25 years.....
Most hunter's have a Macho thing going like it is some sign of weakness to not have it all petal to the metal.....Cavemen throw rocks they do not drive Lamborghini's......And Win races and beautiful girls......."I like to push it a little to where i get uncomfortable with the ground noise and then back off just a hair with either the Volume gain or the sensitivity setting or both"........But remember lesson ONO and be ready to hunt the hot spots with different configuration's......
C# C sharp .........think of it as BIG SEA like a Ocean ....Huge ....... Do or can you experience all of it at once is.... your mind that disciplined.........Discrimination....... in bad ground it can be your best friend or your worst Enemy (bless their little horned heads)
I like to to get a read ......very..... slowly with a white screen ....find the hot rocks, the coal chiggers.....where do these hit in relation to targets you want to find ........every site is a little different and experience will build your own user data base.... then eliminate part of the nail not all of it .................And cherry pick the clicks that Waldo walks over.........
Thanks for that, kinda got me head around some of it but being a rookie guess I'm gonna have to start climbing the learning curve or pick some ones brains. Its the standard 11"coil I'm using very little discrimination as its a quiet site, it just seems that when the ground is wet (and i mean wet it has pi--ed it down for days) i just don't get any deep readings.
Help needed here guys/gals is it the wet ground ? limestone rock ? or just me being a dumb arse ?
or shall we say reflect the RF like shielding on Klee-on a Star ship.....................
But until you try some of the hints written above and embark on the path. You cannnot say this is the culprit and even then there are ways to fudge .....like a complex equation to many variables at this point to deduce proper rectification.....
One it is Wet ....this means that the salt and natural alkaline in the soil could be making a devils brew...
Two have you buried a Standard .....that is 6 months in the ground at least and and barely detectable when the conditions are better or dryer say .......passion penny at 12-14 inches wait 6 moths and test again when it is a day for the dogs to stay inside....(WET WET)
Know And believe you can WIN and it will happen!
