Ground Cancelling

I always search in discrim mode - is it best to use the fast grab or do it manually in all metal then switch over to discrim - just wondered if anyone had done any trials/ comparisons.
regards Dan.

Good question Dan. I use fast grab in disc mode. So hopefully we can get some others to post there ground balance methods as well. I guess I am just lazy

In my field tests in highly varied soil, Fast Grab will generally give you the same number as you'd come up by doing it manually in that spot. Sometimes you'll want to fudge this a little, or your area may be too trashy, so that's when to use manual.

Hi Dopey,

I have always found the Fast Grab to balance with a slight positive offset. If you like a true neutral balance, you will need to go to all metal mode and turn the balance down by 1 number. I know it has 5 detent settings between numbers, but unless you are in really hot ground, you will not hear the detents so you can adjust by the number.

To confirm your GB, after you balance raise the coil straight before you waist high, holding the pinpoint trigger in, and lowering the coil back to the ground until the coil is flat on the ground. The pinpoint mode will see the ground as a signal when lowered from waist height to the ground and return a constant audio signal. If the audio response received from when the coil first registers the ground signal stays the same through out the movement to the ground, you will be neutral balance. If the audio response increases or decreases, you will be positive or negatively offset.

Offset are based upon user preference and your ground.

Many thanks guys
Its better to have it slightly positive - you should still hit on the deeper smaller items - like the sound of the fast grab more and more and so much easier than manually doing it.
