Ground Balancing ...

Willee - Texas

Well-known member
I have a question about ground balancing a detector.

Most say to start with the coil about 10 to 12 inches off the ground in all metal and lower it.
If the threshold stays about the same you got it.

Most detectors I have used the threshold will go away at about 6 inches off the ground and then come back as it gets nearer the ground.
I have never had a detector I could manually adjust to keep the same threshold as it moves closer to or away from the ground.

What am I missing?

Willee, I have Tesoros and a Minelab that require manual ground balancing. I have found that each machine is slightly different in the way it reacts to the GB procedure. I dont know which machine you are experiencing difficulty with, but I would start out by checking the manual and se if it offers any help. If you are already doing things in accordance with the manual, you could try altering the speed at which you are raising and lowering the coil (at different times, not during the same procedure). If that doesn't help, try adjusting the height which you are lifting the coil from the ground. Make sure when you lower the coil that it doesn't actually touch the ground (I read that somewhere). Make sure that the coil is exactly parralel to the ground at all times during the procedure. Make sure before you start that there is nothing metallic in the ground where you are trying to GB. You can only do this in All Metal mode. If you are already doing all these things, then you will need help from someone who is more experienced or more knowledgeable than I am (I sure as heck dont know everything). I hope there is something here that might be useful, Good luck, Sapper.

I'm not part of the Most" as I always tout starting the GB steps with the search coil held about 6" to 8" above the ground. You don't need 12' or more.

If the Threshold audio remains constant from about 8" down to about
