Ground Balancing the MXT

I usually set trac toggle to ground and pump coil 6-8 times and go. Is there anything I should do to get more out of my machine?I read past posts by Monte where he says he prefers a slightly positive ground balance . Have no idea why he likes this and why this gives an advantage. Not sure how he does it either. Manual says to pump coil until ground ceases to respond. I never seem to hear any difference in the machine no matter how many times I pump the coil.

you got it, it tracks so fast u don't need to to do it. thats been my expierence anyway. you use the dd coils by chance?

most of the time.
The MXT will track and adjust quite quickly and, if you are fortunate to live and hunt in an area with relatively low mineralization, you will experience very little tracking change or radical change that you will hear.
I live in an area with a lot of mineralization. Not only is the mineralization high (typically a ground phase reading of at least 73, very seldom less, and frequently in the 81-86 range), but it can change a lot in just a few steps at some of the more challenging older parks in town or at locations out in the woods, mountains, or deserts.
When I am working sites with extreme ground, such as those reading 81-85, I can use the 'turn-on' locked GB that's an 85, or I can simply survey the exposed rock and/or dirt in my hunting area in the Prospecting mode and select a high phase reading spot for the area to balance to and then 'Lock' the GB.
Either way I can end up with a somewhat positive Ground Balance. A slightly positive GB will eliminate false signals over holes and depressions, or especially in these environments when you might be sweeping over some highly mineralized rocks that are just barely sub-surface.
The nice thing about the MXT is that it is always monitoring the changes in the ground and if you pause, toggle to 'Ground' and then back to 'Lock', you have updated the GB setting based on the tracking.
I have found that in conditions with extreme mineralization and with very frequent and subtle changes in the ground phase, the very fast Autotrac circuitry can be too aggressive. Better performance can be had by locking the GB setting. It only makes sense that the 'Lock' function is there for a purpose so I put it to good use.

I may be slow but the way you said it this time and linking the GB being above the required value as positive. I finally figured what you meant by positive GB.

be able to help in some way. It's a great hobby that I hope everyone will learn to enjoy as much as I have.... and do.

I have been bitten by the beach bug and have been looking at water detectors. I don't know if you are into water hunting, I know you have some health problems.
Would you care to rank the top detectors for water hunting? Since I am in Michigan, it would have to be able to work equally well in fresh water as well as salt water. So far as I have been able to tell, I think this eliminates the PI models.
Try to list at least the top three. Top six would be even better. I have gotten it down to my top four. See if you can help me out.
At the current time I do not see myself actually doing underwater diving. More than likely wading and shallow water hunting. Of course a year ago when I bought my MXT I did not even know about beach hunting. I have a friend who is an underwater salvor and certified welder. Ya just never know...
