Ground Balancing the F70 I just got today

Thanks for input I am getting on threasholds and sensitivity levels. I took it out and indeed it seemed slightly chatty in discriminatioin mode, kind of like when I use my F4 in all metal discrimination mode. I will try all your suggestions. I was totally happy with the F4, and got the F70 mainly for the depth, so I get leary when I hear cut the sensitivity, etc. But first re Ground Balancing, you know on the F4 and other machines, you do the pump thing and tweak the knob to get it right depending on the sounds you are hearing. On the f70 it has the Ground Grab. OK hold the Ground Grab and pump- then what? I think the manual is laxed here. I mean do you pump it for 30 seconds or until it goes "Ding" or what. It says you'll get two numbers, hopefully above 40. But meanwhile, do I just stand there and pump it up and down. How long do you do this? I guess it is sampling and then takes care of you later while you're detecting. How do I know when it is ground balanced. It doesnt really tell you that in the manual. Many of the other things sound logical like threasholds, sensitivity, frequency, notching, etc. I think time is what I need, although I do think I will like the options of playing with these adjustments and gauging their affect on performance, etc. I cant really use it till after this weekend now, although I am taking it on my trip this weekend to see if I can sneak off in the evening and get some more introductory time. I think instead of the woods I will go to a park where you know you can see foil laying there, soda tops, lots of pennies etc and judge and learn the machine as you go along. Then a month or two down the road take it to my more serious spots in the woods, etc.

sounds like it ground balances like the t-2. if it does when you push the gb trigger the number is 90 you pump it up and down until the number changes. shouldn't take long.

Just checked the manual and see where the ground balance for the F70 is nearly identical to that of the F75. Switch to All Metal/Autotune, find a clear spot, and bounce until the 2-digit value appears. Release the GROUND GRAB button and start huntin in which ever mode you prefer. If you are using disc mode with a low disc setting, you can re-balance often when you encounter a clear spot.

You pump it up & down till the numbers Stop rapidly changing and it settles on a narrow range. That is as an example, let's say when you begin the procedure it is at 50 and it changes rapidly till it begins to settle around 75. With multiple pumps you may see a 74/75/76 but 75 seems to be the center of the range. How much variance you see when it beings to settle is going to depend on the soil & how smoothly/accurately you are pumping the coil. If you practice over clean ground for 10 minutes you should have it down.

Like the others have said, just pump until the numbers settle down. Also, if the GB is just right, you should be able to hold the coil above the ground, hold the pinpoint button, and lower the coil to the ground. The detector shouldn't sound off. If it does, it's detecting ground minerals. Now the disclaimer - I've "heard" that this works, although I've never got me machine to be completely quiet when I lower it with the pinpoint button held. There's always a slight increase (positive?) as I approach the ground and then a reduction in tone as it is raised again.

I wish you could manually adjust the GB but I don't think it's possible.

You know I have the F4 with manual balance. I know Im at fault for not examining the adds closer, but honestly I thought hey the F4 has manual balance as well as the F5, the F70, I assumed had it. Im not unhappy with the 70, but also wish I had manual control on the balance. Honestly I am going out to well worked over spots and finding deeper stuff (coins) that Im sure other machines have missed, really.

I thought the GB on the F4 was adjustable in all-metal only? I think when you switch to discrim it reverts to a preset GB.
Really, the auto GB on the F70 works great. Give it some time and you'll see. Just curious, what kind of ground are you digging in? Is it highly mineralized?

Hi Osgood,
I've not long had the F4 and am loving it....I had. and still have my eye set on an F70 (just in case I dont have enough detectors already). so I'll be watching your posts with interest. Sounds as if you're already settling in to the F70. but it takes time, especially when you upgrade. Good luck with it.
