Ground Balancing Question on F70

John(Tx)

New member
Using a 50 cent size piece of Hematite the F70 will stay on 99 in both Disc and AT modes, will not balance out, why?. I can ground balance outside with no problem but another question, in the same piece of ground, if I ground balance in the disc mode the number will be 42, in the AT mode the number will be 27, why the difference and will this cause the F70 to ID the target differently? I have noticed that when I GB in AT it is so much smoother and easier than in the disc mode. Thanks, John

John,

The F70 has a safety so to speak built in the disc mode so it wont GB lower than 40 ish. When wanting to gb to an area as at the salt beach, you would GB in the auto tune mode and then switch back to the disc mode and the GB value will follow. The GB value goes down to ZERO in the auto tune mode.

I have no idea why on the Hematite question.

I just went in the back yard and confirmed that the F75, F70, AND F5 all GB exactly to the same number in disc OR AutoTune mode..as they should.
Not sure why your doesnt, unless you have a problem with your unit.
Why are you trying to Gb out hematite? is that something you find a lot in your ground? If it wont Gb out...its probably because its a fair bit higher than magnetite........which is the baseline material for calibration. Not sure at all on that one.
I also noticed that ALL the new F series fishers have an AT mode thats smooth as glass....and I use it quite often in areas where iron isnt a big problem, and I'm just seaching for deep sparse targets. When I got the F5..........I Gb'd it, and used it in the back yard for a full 5 minutes before I realizied it was still in autotune.....it was that smooth.
You may want to give fisher a call about the different Gb numbers in disc and AT, and see what they say about it. The numbers should be the same.......disc OR At mode......... Streak!

if the grounds under 40, then it shouldnt fast grab at all should it??

Hi Streak,

Yes of course it will grab the ground in the disc mode BUT on the F70 the disc mode has a built in limit which does NOT allow it to grab under 40 (perhaps the exact # is 42). What needs to be done is switch to AT mode, gb as usual, THEN switch back to the disc mode. The newly grabbed GB value will now be used in the disc mode.

I am guessing the reason is to be sure no one accidentally grabs under a value of 40 which would be very erratic and noisy, if of course your ground is NOT that low. In other words, it prevents grabbing over a can or some other huge object.

BUT if you really want to grab that low, as on the wet salt beach, you DO NEED to do it as mentioned.

Trust me.

Tony PMed me and it got me to thinking. About two years ago, I had three dump trucks full of river sand spread out over my yard. This sand comes from the Brazos River which does get salty now and then due to lack of rain, that would explain the numbers. I told Tony that I found an area in my back yard where the numbers stayed at 42 on both the disc and AT modes. The hematite I just use to check out the GB on my machines but the number 99 stills stays on the F70, will not move and the machine sounds off every time the hematite goes near the coil. On my XT50, the number gets down to a 2 and even though I can still hear it, it's alot quieter than the F70. In my yard the XT50 sounds the same whether at 0 or 20, will not change tones at all. The tone will change using the hematite. Both machines work good and both go deep but the F70 in this area will go deeper than the XT50, about 4" on coins deeper. Thanks for the help, that's why I like reading this forum, lots of help all the time. HH John

Mine reads ferrite as 98 on the ID scale BUT GBs to it as 90.

Are you maybe forgetting to press the ground grab button?

Maybe I am totally misunderstanding the whole question, which happens:wacko:

Let me know

Tony

I am pressing and holding the GB button, bringing the hematite to about 1" under the coil then away about 18", Just back and forth, the sound blares up when the hematite nears the coil and backs off when leaving the coil, the number just stays on 99. Thanks, John

from 99. Normally I set the HZ to F4 and leave it there, I started adjusting the HZ while using the hematite till I got to F7 and the GB number started dropping and the machine quieted down, that made a big difference, need to remember that next time I go out hunting. I guess electrical interference effects the GB process, don't know. Thanks for all the help. John
