Ground balancing non threshold detectors????

On a previous post title - Is the silver Umax good in heavy iron?

Monte mentioned that it would do pretty well if properly groud balanced. I had a Silver Sabre uMax that has a threshold sound and I could tweak/change the ground balance very easily by turning the ground balance pot. inside the detector. For some crazy reason I just sold my Sabre and have A Silver uMax on its way. I am guessing that the Silver uMax has an internal ground balance pot. just like the Sabre does but my question is how does a person know where the setting should be when there is no threshold sound. Hope I make sense what I am trying to ask. Thanks! Steve.

Uh oh, shouldnt'a sold the SS uMax...

IMHO you should have kept the SSumax.

Yeah I know, I'm kicking my butt now for selling it. But I have owned 2 Silver uMax's in the past and loved them. But that Sabre was sweet. Any other older Tesoro compare to the Silver Sabre uMax. Steve.

Hay Steve,

Here's how monte said to ground balance a detector in the disc mode. It's called Power
Ballancing.

[size=medium]To Power Balance a metal detector, you should make sure the GB control controls the Disc.
mode. This is true of most Tesoro's, for example, except the Lobo SuperTRAQ, Cort

The Eldorado, Sidewinder and Bandido II UMax - IMHO. If you can find any of these, snatch them up. Then go out and kick yourself in the arse one more time for hocking off that SSUMax.

I would even let you kick me in the arse for doing such a dumb thing if ya lived closer to me. Thanks for your IMHO on the detectors much appreciated, now send me a signed blank check so I can grab one of these if they come up for sale . Steve.

Hey, Steve! Just be sure to remember to put the Silver umax in the a/m mode to power balance it- This was also in Monte's article and is how I did my Silver.

I thought that am mode should be used but here is a quote from Monte taken from the aboyve post -

Next, when in the Discriminate mode, and with the search coil held about 8" above the ground
(metal-free of course), bob the coil towards and away from the ground rather quickly, lowering
to about

Hay Steve,

I think it can be in the all metal or just turn the discriminator down all the way.

Both will work, I think.

It's because the Silver uMax does not have a threashold based all metal mode.

The all metal on the Silver uMax is really a motion based discriminate mode

that set as low as it will go.

That's my understanding anyway.

I have never had the Silver uMax version of the Silver.

Happy Hunting,

Tabdog

Hey Tab and Ski! Go to page #6 on this forum and read "how would you ground balance a Silver umax?" and you will find Monte's reply that you should check the Silver in the toggled all metal mode. Want to do the best way!

[size=large]Steve, just follow the steps for Power Balancing that Tabdog posted for you. Let me add that if you over adjust to the too positive side, you can get an audible beep on the down-stroke toward the ground, just like too-negative will beep on the up-lift of the coil.

Just make sure you do this over the most mineralized ground you are likely to encounter in your area, and then you should be good-to-go in most places. E-mail if you have a question. MonteVB@comcast.net
