Ground balance?

steiner62

New member
I have a new 705 with the 10.5 DD 7.5 KHz coil. It will automatic ground balance but there is a lot of chatter before during and after. As soon as I hit the pinpoint/detect button the chatter stops.
Just wondering if this is normal or if I have an issue with the coil or detector?

The Xterra is a very stable machine, and what you're describing sounds like EMI.
Have you AUTO Noise Cancelled? Where is your Sensitivity set?

A little more info would make it easier to help.

Yes this is after auto noise cancel and I backed sensitivity down to 5 from 24 no change in chatter.

Indoors? Cellphone in your pocket? Near a Wi-fi router? Underground dog fence?
In any case, I would take it to a completely different site and try again.
Another thing to try is a factory reset. It often "fixes" glitches, and is considered routine periodic maintenance by many.

I just had to send my 6" MF coil back because of this issue. I hardly ever used the coil but all of the sudden I went to use it one day and it had these same symptoms. It wouldn't stop chattering until I got down to about 3 on my sensitivity. Didn't matter where I was with the coil, it did it inside and out, even in an open field with nothing around that could emit radio or electrical waves. They replaced it with a brand new coil being that it was still under warranty. I'm going to sell the new one that they sent me being that in my soil, the HF and LF 6" coils that I have work fine and the MF is just sits around.

Maybe I'm wrong here, I'm so new to this, but to me it sounds like the chatter is when in the GB mode. When you hit pinpoint it puts into regular detect mode and therefore it quiets down.

Thanks for the input. I will get it out in an open field away from EMI and see what happens and post results.

Got out in the country today and ground balanced the 705. Chatter is much less but still there guess im not far enough away from EMI.

I believe that I would try doing a full factory reset before anything else. It is known to "fix" little glitches. Many consider it to be a periodic maintenance procedure

Do you have access to another coil? Even one from someone else nearby that has an Xterra? Size and frequency doesn't matter. If what you've tried doesn't work, and a factory reset doesn't help, another coil would allow you to determine whether you happened to get a bad coil or not.

I have the 10.5"DD (MF) & 5"X10"DD (HF) The 10.5 is noisier but both coils do it and like I said as soon as I switch out of ground balance into detect mode its fine as long as I don't run the sensitivity to high. This may be normal but it makes it hard to manually ground balance with all that chatter.

A reset may still help. The Xterra is one of the most stable running deep searchers I've ever used, and it shouldn't be "chatty". A reset is known to straighten out problems like you're describing.

I did the FR the first time that you suggested it and again today out in the country with both coils no change. Its done this since it was new 38 days ago.

I that case, a call to either minelab or your dealer would be in order because something's not right.

Thanks for all your help. I will give minelab service a call.

A couple things I may be confused on..... is it chatter or is it the wavering tone that is suppose to be there when you are bobbing" the coil during manual ground balance procedures? Two, when you say it is much quieter after the GB procedure and when you go back to the hunt mode, as long as you don't run the sensitivity too high....... what numbers are you talking about with GB and with Sensitivity?

One last question.....with the X-705, why would you manually set your GB? Setting it Automatically is ten times more "precise" than we are able to accomplish manually. Another way to do it is simply put the 705 in Tracking mode. After a few sweeps, and when the coil is NOT over any target, shut off the Tracking. This will leave your GB set where it was at the instant you turned off Tracking. JMHO HH Randy

No this is chatter other than the normal high or low tones when pumping coil to ground balance. The chattering starts as soon as i enter the ground balance mode and coil is being held motionless. I am able to auto ground balance and when i switch to detect mode i have a normal unbroken threshold. My original question was to find out if it was normal to have this excessive background noise in the ground balance mode.

Well, I think that you've managed to confused several of us a bit, but I understand what you're getting at now.
I have never experienced what you're describing, nor have I ever heard of anyone else having an issue with it. As a result, I really can't offer a solution/suggestion.

Does it seem to effect the overall performance of the machine at all durring a hunt?
And as Randy asked, what are your GB and Sensitivity set at?
Have you tried the Tracking feature to GB the machine?

GB at 40 with 10.5"DD (MF) Sensitivity at 24 & it seems to work ok. I spoke with a Minelab service tech on the phone today and he said this was normal so I'm not sure why mine dose it and others do not?
I will assume its working correctly. Thanks
