Ground balance

I have been trying to push the CTX to its limits . Finding its gain limit us around 20 this is the smoothest area for a very small amount of rejection just old iron .Steel will still be heard but easy to hear. This helps with blending where two metals are in the same bit of ground the ctx is very tight but it is good .One thing I have found with the ctx it doesn't seem to like low mineral soil just doesn't seem to see it to deal with it .On the beach at the weekend with open sceen sen at 30 high gain it fnd it difficult to see a 303 bullet with Mineral crud on it so hit it with a spade to expose it it then gave a clear signal .with this in mind in my garden last night I did a ground balance and blow me away items coing up from extreme depths for there size and supper loud . The only problem is all the discrim has changed a bit a lot more noisy .it does say in the manual don't use ground balance in most places but it made a big difference . The filtration on th ctx is very very good and in my garden which is only 40 x 20 ft I have had two hammered with it .has anyone else seen this or is it my machine

The GB hasn't helped me in my ground but heck, use what works for you, that is what it is there for.

Mr. Fishy - Thanks so much for mentioning GB. As Larry said, it often doesn't seem to make a difference, but if all of us just give it a shot, perhaps we will see some trends on what conditions it DOES make a difference in.

You mention your ground is low in minerals, well, I would say mine is somewhat similar (sensitivity in auto is usually around 19 23 or so) but I can run it hot, often at 30. But, my depth on coins seems to max at around 9". So, it is worth it for me to try out what you are saying. When I get a chance to hunt, I will post what I find here.

they say do not use auto sens in light minerilized soil,,, I guess the machine needs some minerals to track and adjust,,, and in clean ground it may wonder and in the wrong direction,,, I would think auto GB might be the same,,, not enough info for the machine to analize,,,, JMHO

Thank you for your replies. I had a word with Minelab today, about the ground balance, and their reply was that doing a manual ground balance the machine could miss desirable targets .I would expect that it woudn't make too much difference - the machine still does the work but we just tell it when to do it. Ground balance is ground balance. Had a quick look tonight, got 3 targets in the garden but I'm not digging them yet going to have a play my S E pro wont see them so game on .

Mr. Fishy - Well yes, doing a manual GB can cause the machine to miss desirable targets but that is ONLY if the ground changes enough to cause it to do so. And if you are getting better depth by doing a manual GB, well, I would continue to do so and just re-ground balance often enough. This is another reason to have the GB and ground mineralization level displayed on the CTX. Very important information when doing a manual GB!

BTW - What kind of ground mineralization do you have in your test bed?
