Ground Balance?

Active member
How many people use the ground balance feature? I was wondering since the Etrac/Explorer's didn't have this and seem to do fine even in bad ground. Thanks.

I was advised to use it due to the ground mineralization being high in Ca. Does it make a difference?? I'm not sure. Need more time on the ctx. It's like everything else, site determined.

The places I hunt are usually loaded with junk so I have been trying to use the manual ground balance. Seems to be working fine for me. I found this today in manual. 1892 o barber dime.

Yes i'm glad I gave it another try. The funny thing is it was not really that deep. Must have had some trash around it.

In the CTX3030 User Manual page 22 (online PDF) in part , it says:

Pick your sites to use Ground Balance.
I ground balanced the other day where there was a lot of iron oxide in the soil , in the form of a magnetic red pebble. Doing so It helped a lot with ability and when I used the manual sensitivity.
When I GB'd on a sandy site, not at the beach, that had very little, if no ferro mineralisation, just a lot of trash, the CTX lost depth on a tested target.

I'm still to do some more experimentation. Not been in the salt water yet.

I wonder if anyone has experience with GB at the beach and why it is not advised. I tried it at a local benign park and it helped solidify ID readings on various targets without affecting depth.

Reading more on this I realize that my machine had the checkbox enabled so did not do Auto GB. So probably affected results time after time and I didn't have a clue. I'll have to retest at the park and see if with the box unchecked the ID's are stable.

I had ground balance enabled checked and didn't realize it, probably balanced it at one point and forgot. And then i read in Andy's book that it wasn't good, loss of depth, when ground balance was only needed in high M. But i don't recall when i did the balance so could have been on for quite some time. Funny thing is i have been using the stock silver and gone hunting's setting too and found my share of silver, in long since hunted out parks. Iv'e had my ctx for last two seasons but didn't hunt at all last summer! Now i'm incorporating the knowledge of you fine people and Andy's book and since my ground is very average low to mid M, i would think i could squeeze out some more depth via higher sensitivity, and i don't really know if i need too but will, because there is a chance i'm missing deeper faint signals. And of course blending the settings and modes that correspond to depth with cross checking signals with other modes i would think would help me get the deep coins i crave. My history in detecting came in the early 80's when a friend at work came in all the time with these old beautiful coins, i asked him how he found them and the rest is history, but my first machine was a Whites 6000 i think with the meter and knobs metal box attached to a belt. He set the knobs and told me not to mess with it, LOL, I did and my first find was a Franklin half.

Never use it but then I always do the beaches.

Though with high mineral content of a beach not sure why they say not too.
