Ground Balance

Got into an area the other day with a lot of rusty nails & iron. Should I move the trac to lock and if so do you switch with the coil in the air or on the soil next to a known rusty object.

And thats my dumb question for the day.:stretcher:

That is a really good question. You will want to find a clean spot somewhere near where you are going to hunt even if it is 100 feet away and GB as you normally would and then lock it. Then you can go back to the iron field.

Hi Guys,

I am still new to all this. How do you know you have your MXT ground balanced?

Thanks,
Bob

A simple way to check your ground balance is to hold the pin point and move the coil towards and away from the ground, you should get a small change if any in the threshold sound if your ground balance is close, if it rises when you move the coil away from the ground I believe you are too negative, if it rises when you get closer you are more positive. Now of course I could be incorrect on this and someone should correct me if this is the case. I would hate to be spreading untruths :look:

And, when possible, I found the MXT's, and most detectors, to work best if the GB is adjusted to be 'spot-on' or just very slightly positive. That will eliminate the falsing from a too-negative Ground Balance. Once you have a good automated Ground Balance, toggle to Lock before moving the search coil (or while holding in the PP trigger) and that should hold the proper Ground Balance. I almost always set the GB and lock-it so that I don't endure the frequent shifting in GB when sweeping over a lot of hot rocks or iron junk.
