Ground Balance Video?

JT

New member
I have owned a Tesoro metal detector for several years, but never spent much time with the ground balance. After my move to North Carolina last year I have been using the machine more and I think it is time to start using it as designed. Are there any videos on the Internet that demonstrate how to ground balance a Tesoro?

Thanks,
Joe

Hey Joe

Tesoro used to have a video on the GB procedure, don't know if they still have it or not. It is a very easy thing to do, just put the machine in all metal, adjust the threshold hum to barely audible (use headphones) and in allmetal find a spot of ground that is free of metal targets. Now lift your coil about 8 inches in the air and pump the coil up and down from that height (8 inches) if theshold hum gets louder as coil is lowered towards the ground the ground balance is too positive, turn GB knob counter clockwise, If the threshold goes silent as coil is lowered to the ground, GB is set too negative, turn GB knob clockwise. Each time you should retune the threshold before lowering the coil to the ground to check GB adjustments. Retune is a spring loaded position on the allmetal switch that restores threshold hum. Hope this helps....Hombre

if i don't get the ground balance figured out on my tejon and vaquero i'll never buy
an other one of there machines cause they are to cheap to make a video to go alone
w/ each and everyone of there machines, that pure bull hockie.

I'm not sure what the problem is with setting the ground balance. It is a very SIMPLE procedure. The only thing I can figure out is maybe people struggling with this are not finding a place in the ground that is metal free. If you can find the all metal switch, and the threshold knob then you should able to do this. Did I mention that it's a very simple procedure?

Find the all metal switch and place the detector in this position (all metal) after turning it on of course.
Now find the threshold knob and turn the knob back and forth, notice the sound gets louder in one direction and goes silent in the other direction. Do this with the coil away from the ground and away from anything else the detector will respond to like your car.
Turn the knob until you can barely hear the hum. Make sure the sound (hum) is barely audible.
Now walk around swinging your detector, I'd say slowly swing your detector like you're searching for a target and listen to the threshold hum. If the sound (hum) is changing while you swing then you haven't found a spot that is metal FREE. Keep walking around until you find a spot in the ground that is metal FREE (no change in the hum) then stop when you find this spot. Double check the area you've located and make sure there are no targets in the ground near this metal FREE spot
Now, over this metal free spot (with no other targets near this spot) pump the coil up and down toward the ground and listen to the sound. You want the sound (hum) to stay the same as you pump the coil up and down.
If the sound gets louder as the coil approaches the ground then the detector is picking up the minerals in the ground and responding to those minerals by changing the sound (hum). You want to basically disc out those minerals with the ground balance knob. If the sound gets louder while approaching the ground then turn the ground balance knob toward the minus sign on the detector. You can place your left hand (if you're right handed) on the ground balance knob while you're pumping the coil up and down. Turn the ground balance knob around some while you're pumping the coil up and down and notice that turning this knob changes the sound (hum).
If the sound (hum) goes silent while approaching the ground then turn the knob towards the plus sign.
Turn the ground balance knob on the detector which ever direction it takes to make the detectors threshold sound (hum) NOT change as the coil is pumped TOWARD the ground.
Pump the coil up and down and turn the ground balance knob (while pumping) until you find the place where the sound (hum) does NOT change as the coil is lowered to the ground.
This will not work properly unless you are pumping the coil up and down over a clean piece of ground that is metal FREE.

I can't imagine why Tesoro would need to make a video for each and every one of the detectors they make to demonstrate the ground balance procedure. It's the same procedure and it is a very SIMPLE thing to do. People are making this harder to do than it really is. Finding a place in the ground that is metal FREE is the only difficult thing about this procedure.

The Vaquero is really easy. But on the Tejon don't use the all metal (solw retune). Just pull back the pinpoint switch to GB, it is a lot easier. If the threshold gets louder, turn the knob left. If the threshold decreases, turn it right. That's about all there is to it.

Absolutely. Sometimes I will check my Tejons GB by switching over to all metal and doing it that way(with disc knob #1) and its always right where it was set by using the pinpoint. The toughest part of the whole process is finding the clean ground where I hunt:surprised:
before I got into detecting I had no idea how much stuff was in the ground.

Well, I don't speak spanish but now I get the picture.....the sound is supposed to remain the same... not up not down.
Yea, I'd like to see a DVD as well. Some of us would rather SEE than just read an instruction manual. Thats what I like
about Whites and Garrett, they provide DVD tutorials. So far though, the Tesoro is easy to get, except for the GB.
I had problems with that too.

A big part of the problem is finding a place at these parks that don't have metal of some kind.
