Ground Balance really necessary?

Doesn't it just set the machine to a neutral iorn sensitivity and when that changes the unit beeps and noting the phase of the signal return ID's the metals?

Cladman,
I'm no expert on the subject, but since no one else has answered you I'll give it a shot.
On silent search preset ground balance detectors the GB is set at the factory to a point where in most conditions you will never hear a ground signal. The problem with that is you are never actually balanced to the ground. Its a predetermined setting that the engineers use to make the detector seemingly run stable in average soil conditions. While this method works in most soils, when you get into areas with high mineralization where the phase of the ground signal is way different from the preset balance point you start to lose a lot of depth. I'm fortuante around here that prest GB detectors work just fine but, in other areas they lose much depth. Unless you are sure of the ground conditions where you hunt a manual ground balance will give you the best performance.
