Ground balance Question?

Bill M

New member
I just received my Tesoro Vaquero last week and I'm having a few concerns about ground balancing. The level of the tone does not seem to change at all while adjusting my ground balance knob? Also there are NO stops on the ground balance pot/knob, is that normal? Anyone have any magic tricks or tips on ground balancing. Appreciate any help!!!

Watch the first couple of minutes of this. .https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L10NQcT7YDo

i got a vaquero last week also. did you read the instructions? i found it quite easy. you can also go to tesoro's website and read it there also.

Yes I have followed the instructions and watched all the videos I could find on ground balancing a Vaquero, the issue is NO difference in the tone, NO difference in volume, no matter where I go with the adjustment.

that sucks. well, call them tomorrow. im sure they will get it sorted out for ya. good luck.

No stops is normal. I would start with the knob at twelve oclock then make 5 full turns counter clockwise, then two full turns clockwise. This will put it in the middle of its range. It needs to be balanced in all metal , with the machine just slightly humming.

If this doesnt work you could try power balancing in the discriminate setting. On my Vaquero , its too chatty when power balanced and I have to tune the knob a little positive to keep it stable. Ill find the directions and see if that helps .

Heres the power balance directions. When I do it , I get a noise signal on the drop before I get one on the upstroke. I just ignore the signal on the drop.Like i stated earlier, mine is too chatty when I
follow these directions and have to tune it a little more positive to quiet it.

a.. Locate a metal-free clean spot of ground to adjust the GB. You might pick some of the more mineralized ground in the area you're searching (and if you have an All Metal mode you can help locate such a spot.

b.. Select the Discriminate mode.

c.. Set the Discriminate level at the minimum setting (or where you might just reject iron nails on the ground).

d.. Use the highest Sensitivity level w/o noise or chatter.

e.. Start with the search coil held about 6' above the ground, and no higher than 8".

f.. Briskly, ob the search coil toward-and-away from the ground going from 6" down to about

If you lay a couple coins on the ground does your Vaquero find the coins? If you have a red clay brick (not a concrete block one) see if the Vaquero will sound off on the brick. Then see if you can ground balance to the brick. It is possible that the ground you have is completely neutral or mineral free and the ground setting makes no difference. Doesn't happen often but it is possible.
Cheers,

Where do you have your sensitivity set? if you have it set hot then try to turn it down to half or just under halfway, and see if that makes a difference. After you ground balance you can turn your sensitivity back up. GL

Just my experience with the V. Where I live there is a lot of iron and ground balancing made a difference. I went to Bentonville, NC and the soil was very sandy and black and no matter what I did, the all metal tone was stable. So the ground was so neutral I couldn't ground balance.
