Ground Balance Question on the X70

What is the advantage of the manual ground balance over the auto? In the auto, isn't the process the same with the machine determining the ground blance setting instead of me? Thanks.

Probably the most common use will be by users who wish to use a slightly more positive GB. And this may be a bit of a stretch, but here goes. Say you don't like tracking, and you don't like to be constantly re-GB'ing even with an auto mode and you're covering an area that reads between 20 & 30 as you move around. You could then set the GB manually to 25 and just hunt. I know, lots of what ifs? But I've seen stranger things posted on forums.;)

This gave me the opportunity to show my friend just how easy it is to manually GB an X-Terra 50 or 70, I used them both, as well as WHY I like to have manual override of any automated or tracking function.

Through the years I have preferred manual Ground Balance over any preset, or automated or tracking circuitry for most applications. One reason has been because I felt some of the auto-tracking circuitry designs either didn't track fast enough, or they tracked too much and into a range that hampered good-target detection.

Before the X-Terra 70, the auto-tracking model I did like was the White's MXT. I like the fact that you it tracks very quickly and you can then reach down and toggle to 'Lock' and retain that GB setting. If you choose to use the tracking circuitry, it will maintain a functional GB with fast adjustments.

What I didn't like was the lack of a way to manually set it slightly positive (my preference) for more challenging ground at a given site. Also, it takes a two-handed approach to bob the coil and then reach-down and toggle to 'Lock' to hold an established GB.

My X-Terra 50 lets me adjust a GB setting very quickly and with the operating hand. My X-Terra 70 makes it even easier for some. Press the Ground Balance button and then press the Mode/Auto button and bob the coil from 4" or so toward the ground a few times. It's done, and the setting us a functional GB. If I choose to use Tracking the X-T 70 does a very good job and tracks ground changes very quickly!

I demonstrated manual GB to my son and friend with the X-Terra 50 & 70. Then, over three different types of ground, I let them check out the 'Auto' GB feature of the X-T 70. All noted the same thing I did. Over the mellowest site we could find, a deep wood-chip playground, the manual GB and Auto GB sounded alike with a setting of 44. The Tracking achieved the same GB reference number over that particular good location.

Moving off the wood-chip and onto some fill area where they brought in some lighter-colored dirt a few years ago, the manual GB setting was 17. The Tracking circuitry achieved the same setting of 17. using the Auto GB, however, resulted in a setting of 18 with occasional shifts to 17, but most of the time it stayed on 18 if performed repeatedly over the same spot on the ground. Now, and '18' setting is just a little negative compared with the '17', but with the X-Terra 70 you then quickly shift down to '17' manually to have 'just on' GB or you can go to '16' and be a little positive, IF that is what you desire and IF it isn't coin got impair performance.

When we each walked from a section of playground that had a '47' reading across a 2' dirt patch and onto some very mineralized dark gray sand, the X-Terra 70 very quickly tracked from the '47 to '11'!

Remember, too, that the nice thing is that you can use your operating hand to thump-reach the Track touch-pad, and then once it has tracked to the ground, press it again and it is now 'locked', so to speak, at that setting.

Regardless of which of the three GB methods you want to use, the X-Terra 70 is almost effortless to get properly balanced. I prefer to leave either of my units at a particular setting, at least for now, but will be experimenting more with using the Tracking circuitry more often to determine the best times to use it or have it off.

One friend was so impressed using my X-Terra 70 that they are interested in 'upgrading' as soon as they can, and one key reason is that they like the Tracking option and fast, efficient performance.
